Your open-source Notion alternative

Ditch Notion (well not entirely - but you've got to love a spicy title!) for this open-source personal wiki solution that is: free, easy to maintain, and future proof. Gollum wiki is a Git-based note taking solution that stores notes in plain-ol Markdown. In this video I install Gollum wiki on a Raspberry Pi, and show you some extra tricks I use to make it even better.

As a notion power user, I can definitely say that this isn't an alternative, its a completely different software. Its nice to have a semblance of a second brain esque software, but it lacks a lot of the things that make notion so advantageous. I'm all for open source alternatives, but it has to be acknowledged that Gollum Wiki has a LONG ways to go. Nonetheless, I'm definitely going to look into making some contributions-- an actual open source alternative to notion would be impressive, especially since the software has a lot of features for power users that most don't use and some that are hard to replicate but make notion so intuitive (GUIs are just better than terminal stuff ngl). Thanks for informing me that this exists man, I'm definitely going to contribute-- but I probably won't be using it for a LONG time.

For me, personally, Gollum isn't a replacement or alternative for Notion but for a team-internal MediaWiki instance. Gollum is exactly what I was looking for after trying so many other Wiki-like tools: Easy to setup and to update without the risk of data loss, no need to login by default, everything is accessible and editable with very few clicks, a data format (Markdown) compatible to almost everything, no ugly Wiki syntax, a beautiful, simple and clean user interface without magic and a version history created out of git commits. Thanks very much for this recommendation!

I installed Gollum for my team in a local network on a virtual linux server as a reboot-safe systemd service behind an nginx proxy to be able to easily setup SSL certificates as well as a more intuitive/common access via a hostname and port 80/443.

personally not a heavy terminal user so I cant judge much about Gollum, but Notion's templates, ease of use, and google-like sharing capability is out of this world.

as for notetaking, personally I use Joplin: its open-source, crossplatform, few option to integrate with cloud services (dropbox etc)

another useful tool that joplin have is it chrome extension for web-clipping, and it also possible to fetch note through it localhost api

I prefer Obsidian, even though, unfortunately, it is not open source. It is, however convenient. You know, I will probably attempt programming an open-source alternative to Obsidian 😄
