Is Everything About Graphic Design A LIE??? (Maybe)

In this video, we're going to explore the issue of whether everything we use in graphic design is actually a lie. We'll be looking at shapes in particular and see how they can often be incorrect or misleading.

If you're a graphic designer, this video is essential viewing. Many of the shapes we use every day are actually not based on any real mathematics, and as a result, can be misleading or incorrect. If you care about the accuracy of your work, then this video is for you!

This is almost like when a drummer plays slightly off beat and it makes the whole rythm feel more human and interesting

Lemon! Great vid! I love things like this. From an art history standpoint as well, they also use things like this in architecture. The columns around the Pantheon are ever so slightly slanted inward in order to optically appear straight up and down! So cool!

I don’t remember where I heard it but I remember someone saying “everything you see has been designed that way”.
That’s what I love about design, you know and see the tiny things that no one else sees!

It is interesting to see these "lies" and how they actually help us process things a little easier. The joys and diversity of UX.

I am not a fruit for watching this to the end. Such a good summary, love your content! As an industrial designer, I see my colleagues making these mistakes all the time when they try to do typography or logos. It has always been so hard for me to simply articulate the principles, but this video does it really well. From now on, I'll just forward them a link!

I was really baffled by the google logo and especially the illusions in type, heck I can't believe my teachers never told me about such illusions! Thank you for the amazing content Will It's so so helpful😇

Lemon.

It's interesting to see how designs don't always fit a perfect alignment but are more optically pleasing to the eye.

I'm still an amateur but everything I've learned from logo design is from watching your videos and everytime I see a new logo I cant help by seeing all the mistakes because you taught me how to find them

So first of all Lemon

Secondly an amazing video as usual Will. I've learned so much about graphics design from you and hope to continue learning from you.

Finally I'd like to know your thoughts on the new Nokia logo if you have the time to view it!

Gosh I wish I had known this earlier, I'm always striving for perfect symmetry assuming its best practice.... and at the same time wondering why those silly font makers have letters that don't line up!! One of your best videos! #lemon.

Lemon Will,
lime-off to make it line-up with our eyes, hehe
My dad was a lithographer for a fairly large company in the 60s
we grew up with all kinds of cool perks.
Like pre-printing copies of the Dr. Suess books, without their hard covers.
My dad & I absolutely loved the documentary "Helvetica"
it was so rare to find anyone discussing type faces, etc.
I love when you nerd out over fonts.
Before the internet, it was so hare to find font-friends!
