John Sayles on RIDE LONESOME

James Coburn made his film debut as a‚ naive‚ gunslinger‚ in one‚ the‚ finest of Budd Boetticher's‚ laconic series of sparsely stylish low-budget Randolph Scott Westerns, shot mostly in and around Lone Pine, California. Burt Kennedy's ironic script has Scott‚ playing another vengeful loner, this time a‚ bounty hunter trying to take Lee Van Cleef's outlaw brother James Best to face justice in Santa Cruz. The Ranown series, as it's called, was little noted in its day, but over time has‚ come to represent the apex of the B western.

I don't see how any lover of great Westerns could dislike Ride Lonesome.

If I recall correctly, Boetticher also directed the first two episodes of Maverick, and Karen Steele guest-starred in one of them. Ride Lonesome is my second-favorite of the Boetticher/Scott westerns after Seven Men from Now.

I love any western with Randolph scott ..I think my favourite is comanche station...especially the scene when the Comanche warriors are chasing scott and claude akins comes to the rescue.

Chilling ending with Scott gazing up at the torched hanging tree.

I love how Western trailers from 30s-50s often hyped the romance yet this might be the most unromantic and antisocial of Boetticher's Westerns. Scott is practically asexual.

Doesn't even mention Pernell Roberts who steals the scenes in all of the movie.
