The Russian Revolutionary: Zaha Hadid on Kazimir Malevich
First broadcast: Sep 2014.
Episode 12/18 World-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, perhaps best known for her futuristic architecture, explains how her work has roots in an art movement that is 100 years old. She has long cited the Russian abstract artist Kazimir Malevich as one of her greatest inspirations and, as a major exhibition of his work is on show at Tate Modern, together with curators and critics Zaha considers the influence of Malevich's avant-garde art on her avant-garde architecture.

In Arabic, "Zaha Hadid" could be translated literally "Fascinating Metal"

He painted geometrical shapes instead of organic ones and had people going nuts, she built organic shapes instead of geometrical ones and had people going nuts.

In this video the short sequence that begins at 9:33 is truly a break from any expectation. The forms actually move about as if they were actually floating in a 3-dimensional world. A great touch.

Zaha died today in miami. I found her insight very helpful and full of perspective (mind the pun ^--^). Her works are mindblowing, and I am sure she layed the foundation in the minds of many more successful souls, allbeit masons or not.

What a great mind Zaha had. Her early work is wonderfully inventive and visually exciting. The ultra-streamlined non-orthogonal forms of Zaha's newer projects look very contrived. Like a deliberate attempt by her army of several hundred employees to show off their computer skills. At the time of her death the office had a staff of 400 people, with 36 projects across 21 countries. Steven Holl always commented on that peculiar anomaly.

What we do is that we create emotion.

Deep feelings.

It is incredibly disheartening that she passed away to early. So very few architects are transformational in bringing art to every day perception. As you walk the High Line in Manhattan, you will pass a Hadid project in construction. It makes you cry from joy and also from loss.

The black square was revolutionary at first . It is now a feeble cliché. Malevich was a master of colour.

I like Malevich, but never was into Hadid's architecture. I feel it's not very democratic in any way.

The post-WW1 time was was very creative time in Russia, and also elsewhere. I feel the aesthetics, and enthusiasm and belief in future, can't be replicated any more. I was sad when I realised this at the beginning of my architecture studies.

Imitating the past styles, in form, like this, I always considered to be postmodernism. To resurrect that creativity, of the era of Russian avant garde, the social context should also be brought back to life: all that enormous undergrowth of creativity. Otherwise it's just playing with forms.
