Kohaku Koi selection | How to select a good quality Kohaku Koi?

In this video you will learn how to select a nice Kohaku. We have a few 10 month old Kohaku of the Izumiya Koi Farm that we use to explain the basics about this variety.

In order to select a nice Kohaku, it is all about the pattern. Or is there more detail to take into account? Like a nice and bright white skin and a good body posture.

You want to make sure the red pattern of a Kohaku is looking soft. The softer the color red is, the more stretchable it will be when the Koi grows. Softer red and more orange looking red is less likely to break open when the Koi grows. The darker the red color, the less stretchable it normally is. However this slightly depends also of the breeder and bloodline of the Kohaku.

Preferable the red pattern lays between the eyes of a Kohaku. So you want a Kohaku which eyes are covered in white preferably. Preferable the eyelid of a the koi has no red in it. However, this only counts as a small imperfection if the Koi does have some red in the eye.

Make sure the red is equally in intensity over the entire body. Make sure there are no lighter spots of red in it. This will indicate weakness in the red pattern.

Kohaku should not have any black on it. Sometimes kohaku can develop small black pigmentation on the red or white body. Make sure when you select a young Kohaku it does not have any black.

Hi there, I used this info / video yesterday as I chose my first ever young Koi / grow on project.

I think I got most of these requirements on my Kohaku that I purchased.

• Deep Red
• Pattern only half way down the sides
• Decent body shape
• Red ends before the tail
• Gin rin

However, he did have a red eye… but as I say, it did have really nice gin rin so that’s what tipped it for me ☺️
