Ditch the protein shake, and do THIS
During the course of his career, Dr. Gundry has encountered many misconceptions about nutrition, and a Lot of these revolve around protein. He still receives many questions and concerns involving the link between protein and athletic performance. People will say “I’d love to follow the Plant Paradox, but I can’t limit my animal protein to just one meal a day - after all, I’m trying to build muscle.” In this video, Dr. Gundry tackles this misconception and reveals why most people (yes, even athletes) are probably consuming way more animal protein than necessary. He also takes a deeper dive into the link between nutrition and exercise, and gives you the key bullet points for keeping your body fueled during exercise and primed for recovery.

So whether you’re trying to build muscle or maintain your existing athletic routine, make sure to watch this video from Steven Gundry MD for the most updated health information!

I was vegan for 5 years and actually LOST muscle despite weightlifting 5 days a week and eating tons of vegetables and vegan protein sources. Then I switched to a keto/carnivore diet and am gaining muscle like crazy. I feel so much stronger and have less bloating and inflammation.

Dr. Gundry, I appreciate all the points you make and largely agree (I'm a former med school faculty and seasoned biologist and researcher). However, I agree with some of the comments in disagreement with you. As hominids it's striking how fundamentally, evolutionarily, distinct we are from all other mammals including our primate ancestors in having given up a GI system adapted to processing a lot greens for a much larger brain. All the evidence, spanning paleontology, anatomy and physiology, genetics, biochemistry, etc., point to a primarily carnivorous diet. This is the only way to provide the nutrient density required make this evolutionary transition. I would agree that an overwhelmingly animal protein and fat diet may not be best for everyone. However, if one has to choose between safe, convenient vs risky, complicated and time consuming, many are finding carnivory works best for them. After decades on a mainly vegetarian diet six months ago I transitioned to a mainly grass fed beef and real seafood, along with the few known safe fats and oils you mentioned six months ago. At 71 I now have more energy, muscle mass, few if any aches and pains of any kind.

The goal of eating for me was to build huge and big muscles and I was doing that for about 4 years till I felt like fire 🔥 in my gut, I couldn’t sleep well, tired all the time and have had foggy brain after I discovered dr Gundry I really changed to normal ; no gut problems and I’m more focused and sharp … my advice to everyone eat the right food for your gut and forget the crazy bodybuilding diets

Discuss how you modify the human digestive system to function like a horse, bull or ruminant animal to create bio available protein in a video. You mentioned them as a reference to plant protein.

Bears can out run Derby Horses, eat the jockey as an appetizer and then eat the horse alive. Bears are carnivores, horses are not. Why are bears faster and stronger ? Another good video topic.

I practice bodybuilding for 16 years. And unfortunately, in my experience, I can't build muscle without 1 - 1, 5 g. of protein per 1 kg. of body weight. I feel like shit eating vegan diet if I don't add lot's of supplements. I'm always gasy, hungry, tired and I lose muscle like crazy! For me the best "diet" to gain muscle and stay fit is: 1. Keto. 2. Carnivore. 3. "dirty"Carnivore. 4. Classic 50/30/20. And at last place is Vegan with supplements. What DO works every time with any eating style is IF that changed my life and body composition.

An animal handler at a county fair once told me that his elephant eats four bales of hay per day! Humans need more nutritional density than that. Maybe the best overall human diet hasn't been formulated yet. I wonder what ET's eat.

I started carnivore 2 months ago. Breakfast and dinner. Lunch is PPP. I feel so much better. Stronger. I am finally gaining weight, IBS completely gone and I can have a beer without consequences. Yes it’s a lot of animal protein but what can I say. I just works for me.

I disagree I am 15 months on the carnivore diet and I gain more muscle and easily maintain it than when I was vegan-keto.
I agree on the part with protein powders, we should not use them, only whole foods.

The hardest part about increasing muscle is having a good diet. That was my main problem until I found the Agoge diet plan. Now I'm gaining more muscle than ever.

Dr. G., I respect you immensely, but my workout (both resistance and aerobic) training has proven to me that low carb, high (healthy) fat, and moderate protein intake - ESPECIALLY from animals - is crucial to maintaining a strong and lean physique. I try very hard to eat grass fed (AND finished) beef along with wild salmon and sardines, and plenty of eggs from pasture raised chickens. In the past, before I incorporated this diet, my gains were small, I took a long time to recover, and 3 of my joints ached on a continual basis. After incorporating a more animal protein based diet, none of these were problems.

You're a brilliant man, and your books and videos have changed my diet immensely, but my experience as a runner and weigh lifter flies completely in the face of your advice to limit animal protein and fat. I still try to eat veggies as the center of my diet, but without the animal protein sources I've mentioned, I am certain I would lose the majority of my athletic gains.

I disagree with you on this, but please keep up the good work. I always look forward to your videos!

Please explain why "vegetables are essential for muscle growth?…"

HelmetBlissta

"Veggies are essential for building big, strong muscles." Tell that Shawn Baker or anyone else who has been doing full carnivore for several years.. And let's be real, protein is essential in that there are essential amino acids required to build muscle, and certain fats are essential as our bodies can't synthesize them. But there is no essential need for carbohydrate and there is certainly no essential need for vegetables in order to build big, strong muscles. (Why is it, that even when they try, western medical doctors still tend to get it wrong?) It's a real handicap..
