Asking a NYC girl for pricing might not have been the best choice..

Everything is more affordable compared to New York. She has a high cost of living standard.

Yikes, I went at the end of October and paid $400 for 14 days at a hotel. I think that was mostly because they opened back up for tourism but $100 a night in Japan? That’s absurd.

AirBnB is cheap in japan also depends on the area. Saitama is cheaper than Tokyo for instance.

You can find a single room with 30usd. And a double bed for 50usd per night. Now this is for basic proper hotel.
But if you dont mind a capsule hotel or manga cafe you can even find some for as low as 15-20usd per night for one person.
If she says she is staying at a 100usd place per night for a single bed, thats must be quite the big room at fancier hotel i think.
So 30usd per night is definitely doable and can get you a small but definitely comfy and hotel standard room with full amenities. Most room in japan is small anyway.

For food, if you like to indulge and try things out, it can get pricier depending on what you are getting. But a basic complete proper meal should cost around 10usd to 15usd maybe up to 30usd depending on whether its lunch or dinner. I find that lunch tends to be cheaper due to a lot of lunch promotion for some reason.

So prepare 30usd(50usd to be safe) per night for lodging.
50usd per day for 3 meals a day if you on tight budget. But better 100usd a day for full 3 meals a day with the occasional spending on street food here and there should cover it. Afterall most people travel for food.

Next throw in 50usd a day for travel if you use the train a lot to get around

100-150usd a day for food, lodging and travel is definitely doable for a solo/budget travel but 200-300usd can make you more comfortable with any extra spending.

Just went a week ago and i paid 3000 - 4000 yen per night in hostel, you can find 1000 - 1500 per meal, i actually found an udon shop that has $750 yen udon that is so filling i skipped lunch. I bought a JR hiroshima-yamaguchi pass, 15000 yen (but i bought this before going to japan), simcard around 3500 yen good for 5 days unlimited data. I splurge on clothes because i didn't brought any and uniqlo is cheaper in japan, my 5 day pocket money was 50000 yen, if i didn't splurge in clothes it is already more than enough.

You don't need to pay $100 a day, she definitely took more expensive hotels. I paid around $60 dollar.

Really depends on where and when you stay in Japan. Near peak season downtown Nagoya was $70 a night for a 3.5 star hotel, while peak season Tokyo (Shibuya) was $140 a night for a 3 star hotel when I was there this summer.
