Hear me out: The problem with this sport is pretty obvious to a good boxer and chess player like myself. Why train in high level chess when you are a superior athlete? Why fight a superior athlete when you're substantially better at chess? The incentives are wrong. Athletes will deliberately stall the board in chess by pushing nonsense moves, repeating back and forth moves, etc to create the LONGEST chess match possible with stalemate in as many moves as possible being the goal. In between rounds, they will pummel the opponent into submission. The chess match won't matter. Opposite is true, too. The exceptional chess player will fight very defensively and keep running away... turning, positioning themselves in ways to make the punches toward them illegal, etc.... all with the goal of just surviving the boxing round to crush the next round of chess. These perverse incentives will eventually make this "sport" very lame and boring.
