Phone Guy is one of the characters in Five Nights at Freddy’s that we’re introduced to almost immediately, and he’s the character we get to know before William Afton or the spirits of the missing kids. There have been attempts to theorize about who Phone Guy is, but since he isn’t FNAF’s Purple Guy (unfortunately for MatPat), who is he? And why is he in Ultimate Custom Night?

Just a fun little theory since it's probably good to get away from breaking our brains over the timeline XD

I actually made a video about this a while ago, but unfortunately short videos don't perform as well as Short videos, so I thought it would be fun to remake it in the Shorts format now that I know what I'm doing!

Something I like about Phone Guy is that throughout the games he almost always has this calm attitude, even when he’s literal seconds away from death. But there is one time when he isn’t.

On night 6 of FNAF 2, you can hear it in his voices that he’s no longer calm, but scared and panicked when he learns that we (Jeremy) are in the pizzeria with the massively more aggressive animatronics, tells us it’s safer to stay where we are than to try to leave, and even offers to take our next shift on night 7, despite how obviously dangerous it would be.

He cared for us. He didn’t deserve to go out the way he did.

Phone guy is such a chad, survived working for Freddy's for at least a DECADE and never even complained, he just did his job.

My theory is that, since UCN is William's personal hell, Phone Guy is there as a reminder that his actions have caused the deaths of people he hasn't even directly killed. Phone Guy is only dead because William killed the kids who possessed the animatronics.

Kinda terrifying to think about. Your soul being trapped in an object that can't move or see like the animatronics. Only being able to make garbled noise that people would never understand. Just stuck there.

I'm gonna assume that the phone was in the FNAF3 location and burned in there, and that's how Phone Guy was freed.

This would also explain how the phone manages to ring despite the “calls” being no more than recordings. In-the-Phone Guy would be playing the recordings himself whenever relevant for the guard.

I had always assumed that the reason he was there was because it was a part of William's memories, each location being somewhere William has been to. I presume the Phone guy might have been someone he knew at the time, explaing why he was there.

Makes sense, or maybe Golden Freddy has memories of Phone Guy, since he killed him evidenced by the Golden Freddy jumpscare sound effect.
