Remembering Arthur Ashe

Arthur Ashe embodied the highest qualities of sportsmanship. His world-class talent and pursuit of excellence broke down barriers for black Americans in the largely white-dominated sport of tennis. In the 1960s and ‘70s, he became the first African-American man to win Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the Australian Open. In later years, after publicly announcing he had AIDS, he dedicated the rest of his life to raising awareness and educating the public about HIV. We remember Arthur Ashe as a role model who used his athletic brilliance to inspire and bring people together.
