Guide to use AMD Fidelity FX Super Resolution (FSR) on any game. Links in the descriptiom

With this simple tool, Magpie, FSR is usable on any game. Many people think FSR as a simple upscaling tool. Truth is, it is slightly more than that. FSR has 3 three main aspects:
- A lossless upscaling algorithm, which eliminates the quality loss of using lower-than-native resolutions.
- A control on high quality textures. Many games lower the texture quality when the resolution is low. In games which support FSR natively, always highest quality textures are used regardless of the rendering resolution.
- Sharpening and alti-aliasing control. Once FSR upscales the picture, it can be treated as a high res picture so, high resolution anti-aliasing and sharpening can be applied over it. FSR already has an intelligent sharpening filter itself.

Magpie's FSR here gives us only 2 of these 3 advantages. There is unfortunately no way of adjusting the games' texture qualities with a 3rd party tool. LOD Bias setting is something GPU makers (especially AMD) don't want to share with users.

As for sharpening and anti-aliasing part, Magpie has a fixed amount of sharpening but Radeon Settings or Nvidia Control Panel can operate on Magpie and apply high resolution sharpening "after" Magpie does its magic. Anti-aliasing should be applied "before" FSR so, Reshade comes into play here.

The software is still in early stages and I believe it will get much better in the close future. Please remember, the second injection method of Magpie can cause problems on online games. So far there is no report of any banning case but some anti-cheat software may NOT like Magpie.

Reshade: (much more than anti-aliasing)

Process Lasso: (This is a great tool for gamers)

RTSS: (I recommend playing every game FPS capped, it is always a smoother experience)

Thanks for the handy guide. Magpie works great with Stalker, known for it's phenomally jank xray engine. Playing it at 4k results in my pc struggling down in the mid 20s due to the fact it's 2009 engine wasn't designed for that in mind.

Upscaled from 1080p with all antialiasing options maxed out and the fake 4K looks good. About 80-85% the quality of 4k. It won't ever match true 4k but the fps was much better in the 55-60fps range with way less stuttering. Magpie introduced about 2-3% extra cpu usage and 8-10% extra gpu usage on Ryzen 5800x and RTX 2080 Super.

The problem with using FSR after rendering the game, is that things like chromatic aberration or film grain will look bad, that's why it is integrated into the graphics engine, first it does the post-processing without chromatic aberration or film grain, that's why epic games added the ispatialupscaler (a class within the graphics engine) in unreal engine 4.27.1, so that you can create a spatial scaling inheriting the ispatialupscaler and work natively, so amd could publish the FSR in the unreal marketplace, the ispatialupscaler is that the scaling algorithm runs in the middle of the post-processing and not at the end or the beginning

Thanks for the video. Now I know what I need to do to test on my computer.

Thanks i aint aware that it has other use other than being the general sharpening tool

But this is not recommended for those who play games with unlocked fps where the game can't reach the same fps as the monitor refresh rate because when magpie is running, vsync is also always on due to windows 10 DWM.

Can I benefit from this when I have RTX 2070 Super + 1080p FreeSync Monitor ?

Meaning I would see the 100+ framerates ... or is it just 60fps capped only 🤔?

also ... Does it work with Nvidia DSR ?

Hello! when you play it stutter a lot? I tried this before and it is not playable, though, the image look sharper.

THis might come in handy for my unoptimized games like Ark! I don't think I'll hit my monitor's refresh rate but this is very very handy!

Will there be any change in cpu utilisation?
After you set magpie to higher priority?

Which is better between them?

I have a GTX 970 and Win 8.1, can I still utilize this tool?
Is it only for SP games? Will I get banned for using it for say, Valorant / Rainbow Six Siege / CSGO? I understand that it's simply an upscaling tool but if it "hooks" onto a game, the anti-cheat might pick it up.

I use fsr on magpie! What a great thing to share with the world of gaming. If you're still not 100% sure what fsr is or does, you can use mag pie to upscale a static image on windows. So its easy to take say a 1080p image. And compare it to 540p.. then compare it to 540p upscaled to 1080p and have an image on your screen to compare the quality so easily. I should do this in a video.

BTW, it look like a painting when you upscale to 4x the pixels. Does a great job ov removing the blockyness of this low res image.

This video has explanations that make no sense. RivaTuner does improve frametimes (you didn't seem to explan the reason to use it) but it can also introduce micro stuttering or strange issues with some game engines, some games just hate it and behave weirdly with RTSS on, also sometimes the fps cap can cause some CPU usage spikes depending on the game and is not always perfect. Also it is recommended to use Magpie in Borderless, in Borderless using in-game vsync yields perfect framepacing of 16.6 ms at 60 fps or any framerate you have according to your monitor's refresh rate. Using RTSS in Borderless is redundant and it's only meant to be use if a game EVEN on Borderless has uneven frametimes by using MSI Afterburner OSD to check. Then again, some games that may report uneven framerate may still be smooth and get much worse with RTSS, such as Forza Horizon 5.

Reshade is optional for visual effects, is not like you have to install it either. It costs fps and some people dislike the shaders.

RTSS should be an option, not mandatory, some games break with the fps limiter, they just don't like it. Clear examples of this are Forza Horizon 5, The Witcher 3, Resident Evil 2 Remake and some others. They stutter even more with the external fps cap.

You don't limit fps in apps LMAO, what even dude? Apps don't have fps, they don't consume your GPU in a continuous way like a game does lol, what you did is straight up stupid. It's like limiting Firefox to 60 fps, why? An app is a standstill thing, it just syncs to your monitor's refresh rate and it's static on the background, is not like Magpie is taking 144 fps. Seriously, wtf. By doing that, you are making your CPU work more for no reason and creating more potential stutters.

Touching process priority is also a dumba** placebo and should never ever be done unless is quirk from the app or that by changing it, it would work better. Windows manages this on its own and rarely helps in any sort of "fps boost". Your hardware is your hardware, simple as. Now, some games do get a dramatic fps change by disabling Core 0 in Task Manager, but this is different and nothing to with Process Lasso or priorities.

Process Lasso is meant to be used for apps with poor core scaling or that they are choking most of your CPU, so you use that to limit such apps, for example in RDR2 it prevented freezes in 4 core CPUs, aside that it's useless to use it. Optimizing Windows properly, enabling game mode, using better power plans and other things are a better way to make any game run better. This video is misleading and useless.
