It's mask karneval, and it starts 22.2.- 4.3. In that time people mask them self. In our village chilren wear masks and are going house to house to colect money or sweats(nowadays). In old days they colected dounats or backend goods, or eggs...when i was younger I alwas greet house i visit with saying: imate kaj za debelo repo? That mean like: Do you have something for a fat turnip? Meaning is like do you have something for good harvest? Children are allowed to have masks also in scool and kindergartens during this time, we adults are wearing masks only on weekends when we go out.
Kurent is the most important part of karneval, with the loud shaking of their bells the kurents drive away winter and evil from the land, and invite in spring and a good year. I'm so glad that you visited us in Ptuj.
