National Anthem of Switzerland (in German): Swiss Psalm

The "Swiss Psalm" (German: Schweizerpsalm) is the national anthem of Switzerland.

It was composed in 1841, by Alberich Zwyssig (1808–1854). Since then, it has been frequently sung at patriotic events. The Federal Council declined, however, on numerous occasions to accept the psalm as the official anthem. This was because the council wanted the people to express their say on what they wanted as a national anthem. From 1961 to 1981, it provisionally replaced "Rufst du, mein Vaterland" ("When You Call, My Country"), the anthem by Johann Rudolf Wyss (1743–1818) that was set to the melody of "God Save the King". On 1 April 1981, the Swiss Psalm was declared the official Swiss national anthem.

Composé en 1841 par Alberich Zwyssig (1808-1854) avec les paroles allemandes de Leonhard Widmer (1809-1867)1, ce chant devient hymne national avec un statut provisoire en 1961 puis définitif en 1981. Le texte officiel français est de Charles Chatelanat (1833-1907).

Das Lied wurde 1841 von Alberich Zwyssig, einem Zisterziensermönch des Klosters Wettingen, zu einem von ihm leicht veränderten Text von Leonhard Widmer aus dem Jahr 1840 komponiert. Zwyssig wählte den Messegesang Diligam te Domine (auf Deutsch: «Ich will Dich lieben Herr»), den er 1835 für eine Pfarrinstallations-Feier in der Dorfkirche von Wettingen komponiert hatte, und gab ihm den heute bekannten Namen Schweizerpsalm.

Die Hymne ist im Gesangbuch der Evangelisch-reformierten Kirchen der deutschsprachigen Schweiz unter der Nummer 519 und im katholischen Kirchengesangbuch unter der Nummer 563 zu finden. Im Christkatholischen Gebet- und Gesangbuch trägt sie die Nummer 728.

Composto nel 1841 dal monaco cistercense Alberik Zwyssig (1808-1854) dell'abbazia di Wettingen, venne fin da subito frequentemente cantato in occasione di importanti eventi nazionali. Inizialmente il Consiglio federale declinò più volte la richiesta di riconoscere il Salmo come inno ufficiale nazionale, con l'intento (mai attuato) di rimettere ai cittadini la decisione su quale composizione utilizzare allo scopo.

Dal 1961 il Salmo sostituì provvisoriamente quale inno nazionale il canto Rufst Du mein Vaterland (Ci chiami o Patria in italiano, O Monts indépendants in francese, E clomas, tger paeis in romancio), scritto da Johann Rudolf Wyss (1743-1818) sulla melodia di God Save the King, per poi essere dichiarato ufficialmente inno nazionale in data 1º aprile 1981.
