Who ever it is baby Groot or adult Groot, I like both of them . He is the only guy in whole Marvel movies who can be cool, happy and can enjoy the moment that he lives in even when his teammates are fighting with enemies .

I wonder if Rocket wasn’t just so sad that the OG Groot died, but maybe because he knew his friend was gone. Everyone else thought he died for good, but Rocket knew he would rebuild. He was just that his friend was gone.
Perhaps when he first found Groot in the first place he was much smaller. Possibly in one of the stages we’ve seen now. It would explain how, as he grew, he adapted. His height was to aid Rocket, and when James Gunn said OG Groot was treated like an animal, maybe it was because he was growing up for the first time beside Rocket. It would explain their close bond in the first place. They adapted to each other, with Rocket naturally using long range weapons, and be the short one. Groot becoming the muscle and tall one. Rocket would be familiar with how the life cycle works, and it’s why they all instinctively treated baby Groot as the child of OF Groot.
