band-maid - play (live version) reaction from guitar tutor, informal analysis and guitar lesson with music theory tutorial for the verse and chorus sections. Reacting to hearing this song for the first time and coming at this from a professional musicians point of view. With easy to understand music theory, instrumental breakdown with riffs and compositional insights!

Another barnstormer from band maid and probably one of my favourites of theirs so far!

Feel free to leave any suggestions and requests in the comments. Or if you'd like a more comprehensive, less guitar-centric and more accessible breakdown of one of their songs.

Pro musician and guitar tutor reacts to the amazing bandmaid; Kanami Tono lessons, music theory from guitarist and bass player & teacher. While this is my first time hearing band maid reaction, I also analyze the song's concepts and techniques. Teaching some of the compositional tricks alongside how a guitarist reacts to this all female Japanese rock band!

Play started out as an instrumental, but Saiki thought it would make a good song so Miku wrote lyrics for it. That probably helps explain the weirdly cool structure. It's a live staple, but they change the intro bit periodically. It seems to get more elaborate and epic each time they re-work it. This is intro #2 of 3 I have heard them do for this song.

Unexpected is the best definition for Band Maid. Ever since they began as a band they have surprised everyone at every turn. Thank for your usual way of showing more that I haven't seen before in this song. I think an in-depth review would be great. Warning, Manners or No God from the new album would be interesting.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Miku's highly enthusiastic yell at 15:05 caught the entire band off guard and they tease her about it to this day... but when the little pigeon yells "SING!!", you'd better

Thank you very much for just another wonderful insightful breakdown. You’re one of the very, very few reactors I absolutely don’t mind if you stop every second. I learn so much. And in my humble opinion Band-Maid is on a level of its own. Fantastic band, never boring, not a second, always surprising and songwriting wise and instrumentally top notch.

Kanami is a genius, Miku is a genius, Saiki is a genius, MISA is a genius and Akane is a genius, Band-Maid is a bunch of geniuses.

No problem with that starts and stops because I know what you are trying to do! BTW the beginning up until Saiki talks is not on the album. That was only a live intro. This song is a great workout song!

Great educational job. Sounds great a deep analysis of a song!. Until now you have known the rock side of Band Maid but they are capable of playing very different styles. Their song Wonderland is an example. On the other hand, on their YT channel you can listen the song No God that shows a more prog side (it belongs to the LP Unseen World like Warning and Giovanni). Anyway, any song you choose is a guaranteed success.

Who does not recognize the talent of these ladies is just ignorant, superficial or stupid... Like you said, alone in this song you can´t put your finger on: This is the chorus, this is the verse, this is the bridge, they ALWAYS play in their own style. They don´t care about the genre, the structure or anything, it just has to sound great and they wanna have FUN with this song and their fans! That´s it, that´s the chemistry and NO ONE will reach their level IMO! They are unique and theirselves on stage... Friends with love for music and entertaining their fans! The sky is the limit!

MISA and Kanami are in the zone, man, in that intro. Look at their faces! <3

Love your analysis and breakdowns! As you say, so much going on! Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things! Happy to see Miku get a highlight in the intro! Great song from Band-Maid!

They're certainly students-of-the-craft when it comes to balancing, layering and featuring their instrumentation and vocals. Their songs have wonderful progression. As others have suggest, but it's too bad Puzzle isn't on their YT channel for ready analysis. It could be found on other sites like Bilibili though. But pretty much any of their songs are gems. If you'd like to hear their songwriting diversity give their jazz influenced "Wonderland" a personal listen.

I love seeing musicians pointing out the cool stuff going on at their first hearing. Why not stop anytime you find one?

Kanami is a genius at using the IVmaj7 so effectively to start their chorus part (in many songs). Riff driven one chord progression verse suddenly changes to a catchy sing-along with the IVmaj7 (and it starts with a square 8 beat, so creative!!).

I still have 3 boxes of BAND-MAID, that I bought in 1951, under the kitchen sink.

My favorite BAND MAID song is the last one I heard.

Kanami's Gear from an interview:
PRS Custom 24 "I have tried other guitars as well. Among those I’ve tried, PRS was the perfect guitar for my image of BAND-MAID songs."
Amps
Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier
4×12 Recto Standard cabinet
Effects - When I compose, I don’t think much about the effects. I use it to enhance the songs I've already written live.
Here are the typical settings of my pedalboard:
Delay: Free The Tone FT-2Y, Eventide TimeFactor - I prefer using Digital Delay on the TimeFactor and on the H9, I use Spring Reverb. I use Free The Tone FT-2Y in a series circuit because it adds delays to a set tempo. TimeFactor is used to connect sends and return effects to clean and solo channels. On the other hand, I use H9 only for songs that use reverb. Currently, I only use it for reverb, but I would like to try more algorithms in the future.
Reverb: Eventide H9 - I am a big fan of Eventide's so I want to keep using it forever!
Volume: Shin’s Music Perfect Volume
Drive: One Control Strawberry Red Overdrive, Fulltone Obsessive Compulsive Drive Overdrive Distortion - I use the boost pedal to add more gloss and deepness in the clean channel or to amplify the sound of the solo or riff.
Booster: Friedman Buxom Boost
Compressor: Pete Cornish OC-1
Noise Reduction: ISP Technologies Decimator II
Wah: Morley Steve Vai Bad Horsie 2
Octave: Digitech Drop

Man, that was GREAT! First, just a simple "Thank You". I know these things must be a LOT of work, so the effort and your expertise is much appreciated. Secondly, I'd love to see what you'd do with "Secret My Lips", comparing it to "Secret Maiko Lips". There are some surprises in the later. Thanks again!

Since the 1st time I heard this I'm always reminded of Hendrix "Purple Haze" around 3:24 to 4:20, or is it just me? haha
It's like a little nod at a classic.

OH, another note haha- Theres yet a 3rd version official live. I think it was Studio Coast, but may have been the Zepp recording (Im sure someone know which)
Another awesome breakdown mate :)

They recently released a live video of Manners and Black Hole. I'd love to see what you do with Black Hole. When completed, it should make for quite a long video for you. It is insanely complex.
