Pinay girl here. OMG. How did I not think of piping the damn lumpia? We know your lola’s secret but girl your secret to rolling lumpias is golden.

I feel like my mom makes super untraditional lumpia too, but for different reasons. She uses beef, carrots, green beans, & cabbage, along with plenty of oyster sauce, garlic and brown sugar, and cooks that mixture first. Then she uses a super thin, circular, Filipino brand of lumpia wrapper & tightly wraps each one like a burrito. We don’t eat lumpia often and I’ve never had any other lumpia where the filling was cooked beforehand, but everyone LOVES her lumpia.

This particular recipe in this video is almost exactly how my grandma made it.
She was visiting us one time and I attempted to make lumpia myself, I already had all the ingredients laid out and prepared and then she looked at me and asked me what I was doing, 😆, and innocent me said "I'm making lumpia."
Then she told me, 'it's okay I'll just make it."
I had the shrimp out, but I wasn't going to put it in the lumpia. I was just going to make it sauteed with butter on its own as a side dish to go along with the Lumpia.
My grandma's and proceeds to chop up the shrimp and add the shrimp to the lumpia mixture along with some diced chicken.
I was so surprised because she was a pro at it and it didn't even take long.
It would have taken me several hours!!
Love my Nanay!

Usually i use young bamboo roots, bean sprouts, grounded chicken, and ebi (dried shrimp) as filling. no one asked it but I'm from Indonesia and we call it lumpia too <3

Fish sauce is so good. It's like a liquified salt with umami.

My white dad is a picky eater so whenever him, my filipino mom and I would make lumpia, it'd just have ground turkey, sliced carrots and some garlic. However we'd always try to make sure to get the best egg roll wraps at an Asian market because if you get the wrong ones, it just wouldn't either taste the same or they wouldn't be crunchy enough when you fry it. I always loved having it that way when I was young because I was also very picky and still am and I would rarely eat my filipino grandma's lumpia. I still love them the picky way, but now that I'm older, I don't mind what's in my grandma's lumpia and appreciate all the ingredients in her lumpia. I'm still picky about certain dishes like pancit, but I'm so happy I can eat her lumpia without complaints. That's what I love about Filipino culture. You're allowed to experiment. In my family, as long as you try it or you find a way that you can like it, we embrace you in our culture and appreciate you.

Best part about experimenting is that you could potentially make a dish that’ll be loved for generations! I love my mom’s traditional way of cooking but she’s always told me to never stop growing with ideas because that’s how most dishes were created, a mixture of different cultural cuisines!

Memory Lane!! When I was 4, we lived next to a Filipino woman who taught us how to make lumpeia. It was my favorite meal and I asked for it every year for my birthday dinner. Over the years it was lost (due to moving every couple of years - Dad was military) so I'm thrilled to see these videos!

I made these tonight and it was so easy and fun and delish!!! Thank you!!! I live in Idaho and there’s a place close to Boise that I get these at but didn’t have time to drive (it’s a two hour drive where I’m at) there so I just made them. Didn’t realize how easy they are. Thanks again!
