There was a super controversial discussion about the WAFO baskets on the German coffee forum as they were not able to explain the differences of the baskets and how patterns affect extraction. WAFO responded theses questions like "you don't have to buy them" in a pretty arrogant way. Would love to see how they actually differ compared to each other and compared to the Unibasket from Weber Workshops (got mine today and sprinkled my whole kitchen with espresso as the flow rate increases as hell)

EDIT: The questions towards WAFO were if they could explain the differences between the SOE classic and spirit baskets and how they affect extraction, also why they intentionally cause channeling with their BLEND baskets and why this is a specific thing for blends but not for single origin beans. Also they habe been asked why they recommend NOT to use paper filters while other manufacturers of ultra-precision baskets recommend to use them. They could not answer any of those questions but got annoyed, so it seems they were just creative with laser patterns…

I don’t really get it because the water has already passed through the puck before it hits the holes in the basket. Worst case scenario is the water will move sideways when it hits the bottom off the basket causing localised turbulence. But if it tastes good, what do I know?

Is it any different than using a conical burr grinder or using a single basket to get a more uneven extraction? Or just do the air tamp?

I have a feeling were going to see A LOT of basket competition this year and just different variations in general. I can’t wait to see a full length video from you regarding the wafo and basket craze. I heard that these wafo baskets are really good for cafes/commercial use but I cant recall the specific reasons why.

Well, they are going to have to do one at 51.6mm for my La Pavoni Europiccola if I’m going to try it. And cut the price drastically.
Sometimes things in the coffee world just get a bit silly!

How do you know that your perceptions were not merely placebo?

If you've performed a blind experiment involving several other participants, randomizing the baskets used, and comparing perceptions, then I'd be willing to accept what you've said about the effects of this basket... If not, then I strongly suspect it's just the placebo effect.

For the majority of times, a 'groundbreaking'-ly new product costing so much (say $200) is not because it's worth it, but the cost. Meh. Worse still, it could be a scam altogether

nope, not ready to part $200 yet. VST/pullman with a paper filter will get you the same results taste wise.
