Comparing the performance of the 3.3hp and 5hp Mercury outboards on the same Aluminium boat. Both of these outboards are built by Tohatsu in Japan, I love the smallerTohatsu (50hp and lower), great motors.

thanks for the comparison. it puts the electric outboard companies' "3hp" claims into perspective. the 3.3 actually moves the boat quite well!

That’s incredible that a 3.3 hp outboard will plane a boat. Thank You!

I'm a boat guy, grew up with boats and motors, and it still impressed me how those little motors pushed that boat

Thanks for the comparison. I have a 2.5hp Mercury on a 10ft alumacraft and not pleased with the performance. I will be upgrading to the 5hp.

Totally interesting - the 5 seems worth the extra!

I saw a comparison recently between (iirc) a 5HP and a 9Hp. The 9 whooped the 5, and the only difference between the otherwise identical motors, apart from the price, was the 9 had a bigger hole in the carburetor jet.

I just put a riser bracket on the back of my 11' De Havelland Tinny to get the cavitation plate of the outboard level with the bottom of the boat. It absolutely flies with a 5HP when I sit in the middle of the boat like you do but it doesn't like turning at full speed now without Ventilating. Any suggestions? Also what is the height of your transom, mine is 17.5" now?

I am new to boating. I just ordered a 14-footer PortaBote which has a max load capacity of 701 lbs. Can this 3.5HP handle a 570 lbs combined weight?

I have the 2.5 tohatsu version. Does the 5 hp have a legit reverse?

Fantastic spreed! I have a 12 foot fibreglass boat with a 20hp honda on it and I can only get to 25kph, maybe I need a different propeller? 🤔

I have both of those motors Tohatsu branded. Also I have a Honda 4 stroke, and Nissan/Tohatsu 2 stroke motors, both 5HP. The Honda just chugs along at full throttle with my 3.500 lbs sailboat, the Nissan makes it fly, big difference. The problem is that in California where I live, is not legal to sell 2 Strokes anymore, and in Lake Tahoe, a beautiful lake in the Sierras, 2 strokes are forbidden altogether. Nurse your 2 strokes as long as you can

If anyone has 2 or 2.3 or 2.5 engine all made by Tohatsu if you remove large washer in carb inlet Voila you now have a 3.5hp Outboard....

Thanks for the comparison. I’m going to buy a 5hp Tohatsu shortly, but notice Parsun is also popular and cheaper. Would be interested to know your thoughts on the Parsun if you’ve tried it before.
