My love/hate relationship with the Edinburgh Fringe

I have VERY mixed feelings about the Edinburgh Fringe, and even though it's made me happy and made me sad, I've taken a lot of shows there over the years - and I'll take one more up there this year. But why do I find it difficult? And why am I going back?

Thanks for your usual honesty Mat. This is a real insight in to the Fringe performer's view of things - something the rest of us don't usually dwell upon. I've been an Ed Fringe regular since 1987 and have always thought how cockeyed the review and prizes systems are - I've seen brilliance ignored and lazy mediocrity praised to the skies. It shouldn't be a competition, that's not why it was started in 1947. My top tip is to dive in and see something truly 'fringe'; the performers will always be delighted that you gave them a chance. Why not try the Gilded Balloon this year at, say, around lunchtime?😁
