This is not a music performance. This is a religious experience.

I was working backstage security at Woodstock, and out of all the great musicians and acts, Santana's drummer really stood out. He looked to be about sixteen years old. I had never seen or heard of him before, and he totally blew my mind.

Michael Shrieve achieves a maximum percussion performance with the minimal drum kit. Just amazing. I have watched this video many times and still get goose bumps. All young drummers should study this historical performance and learn.

Please don’t forget that they were playing in August under +90F cloudy, muggy weather! I know because I was there! I was 19 years old and travelled with my best friend to Yasgur’s farm on the back of a 1967 Norton Commando Highrider. Peace❤

Shrieve is a hidden gem. He was so young and so talented at this show. But look who he had to keep up with!! Carlos on guitar and Greg Rolle on B-3. What a band.

long time player and woodstock attendant here (I was 16). Certainly a highlight of the festival, when double sets were on the way in he stuck to his guns. We're all fortunate to be around for this ten minute lightning strike. Michael was playing well beyond his years... and ours. Guys like them wrote the book.

Fun fact: The whole band was peaking on lucy because the schedule got changed at short notice. they were originally meant to play at midnight. Jerry Garcia offered them some of Hofmans potion, and there you go, one of the most cosmic and transcendent performances ever documented in music history. Pure magic, a beautiful moment. You can really feel like being there when watching Woodstock footage.

I was there. We were all just enjoying the music of this band on a lovely sunny day. Then you could feel like an electric shock go through the crowd as everyone at once realized what was happening! One of the best moments of Woodstock. Thank you for this video!

I know what hearing Santana for the first time was like for the 400, 000 people at Woodstock. One evening in Fall 1968 I happened by chance to walk into a concert at a local high school in Hayward, CA and my life changed forever. I had heard all the local bands, Big Brother, Country Joe, Quicksilver, Moby Grape, Steve Miller, Jefferson Airplane etc. but nothing had prepared me for Santana. At most concerts in those days the crowd just sat on the floor stoned and groovin' to the music. Santana was a revelation getting the crowd up on their feet dancing and clapping their hands joyfully. It was absolute musical magic. The next Monday I booked them to play my high school ($500) and got to see my school mates be as dazzled as I was.

This was an incredible performance by the entire band and notably Michael, who set the bar on drums very high that day. The white hot energy displayed here just stunned me as a kid. I have watched this performance 100 times and it still brings tears to my eyes.
Cheers!

This is a soul synchronicity within the band that is extremely rare to hear or find in any performance especially live in front of 1/2 million people.

I’m damn closed to tears right now knowing that this is so lost in todays music. I’m 69 yrs old.
