Those classic logos are the best. It brings me back to the 70's when I was a little kid!

WGBH is also famous for making Arthur, which is the longest animated PBS Kids series. They also made FETCH with Ruff Ruffman, Between the Lions, Design Squad, Postcards From Buster (an Arthur spin-off), and my absolute favorite of all, ZOOM. Yes! I was a fan of ZOOM after seeing their episodes. 6 and 7 are my favorite seasons!

I've always thought the tube logo was cool, and it suits the music better. It came out when I was a kid, but I'm old enough to remember a couple of the previous 70s variants.

The French flag variant preceded episodes of Julia Child's "The French Chef" cooking show, produced by WGBH, broadcast on most PBS stations for decades under different names (but all hosted by Child), and very popular—popular enough that Saturday Night Live spoofed it. Her kitchen was moved from Boston to the Museum of American History in D.C. when she died.

The green/yellow variant was before a kids show from WGBH called "Zoom". I'd've been 3 or 4, ~1972/73. They seem to know how to create educational shows that are entertaining to watch. Most local PBS stations in the US don't have WGBH-level money, so they don't make cool logos or create shows like NOVA.

If you have an updated version if you come back, WGBH has been sadly changed into GBH in 2020. I mean, I dig the new font and the purple color, but losing the W is the only thing we're concerned. 😔 Yes, gone was the neon lines of the logo that we know and love (and creeped out), but at least the music stands here. However, they could've kept the W in the logo and changed the color of the neon signs to purple. It was explained that they ditch the W of the logo because it reflects their commitment to “digital-first content” of web-streaming, apps, podcasts, social media, educational curricula and virtual events, and the W of the logo was the letter for customs of the early 20th century radio stations in the past. Technology is evolving, and they believe the station should evolve as well. While it is hard to see the W being gone, it is understandable that everyone switched to their phones, computers and other devices, so I guess we have to move on for the future. It may have changed, but it will always remained the same in our hearts.

I dont mind the zooming wgbh logo. Even the nova version (not because I'm prone to epilepsy, cuz I'm not) and the Neon WGBH trilogy will always be the best. RIP to the dev of these beauties.
