In the midst of forming his team, coach Porter (The Rock) also has to deal with the pain of losing his mother (L. Scott Caldwell) who is dying of cancer. She’s a gentle woman who, in spite of her personal suffering, lovingly supports her son. The team is touched by their coach’s devotion to his failing mother and they chip in to buy her flowers and a card which they all sign their names on it. As for Coach Porter’s dad, it’s revealed that the man was hard driving and angry. In a tearful scene in which Porter lectures Willie about the power of forgiveness, the coach finally finds forgiveness in his own heart for his own father.

I'll never forget when this movie came out... Years after my mother passed away. Nothing like a team. My Junior Year in High School. The summer before was one of the highlights of my young life as an athlete. Season started... And I learned of my mother's illness.

I started missing practices and not even showing up for school sometimes. My Coach reprimanded me because he told me that he knew about what I had done over the summer and he was expecting me to take over. Well... I hadn't let anyone know of my Mother and it was because I didn't know how to even speak on it. I had only known about it for about 2 weeks.

My Coach ran me for 3 practices straight... And then he asked what was going on. I finally let him know and he was so heartbroken because he knew my Mother and he was highly upset with me because I didn't tell him. I showed up the next day and my team was in tears and I thought something else had happened. They all just hugged me and told me things would be ok.

She died 2 weeks later. When I came to clean out my locker because I was quitting... My team hugged me and wouldn't let me go. I still held strong. I had never felt so broken inside. I got outside to the car with my dad and just collapsed. I couldn't even breathe. I never played with that team again. Some of us had played together in every sport since pop Warner and little league.

As long as I live, I'll never forget that moment. I didn't pick up a ball until a few years later and got me a D1 scholarship and played overseas after. All I know is this... You never really know what someone is going through. A little kindness goes a long way. You never know if you will see them again.

Love on your friends. Love on your family... Love on your siblings... Love on your Dad... And just love Mama. 🙏🏿😞

This scene is connected to the other scene where he is talking to Willie about the power of forgiveness. He looks up to the sky as if he's saying mom I forgive him.

This scene hits hard. My mother also had lung cancer. She survived, but I was only 12 when it happened. It definitely scared me.
