Coronavirus outbreak: Which sectors of the Canadian economy were hit hardest by COVID-19 job losses?

On Friday came the unsettling news from Statistics Canada that nearly two million jobs were lost in April, adding to the one million lost in March, pushing Canada’s unemployment rate to a staggering 13 per cent.

The unemployment rate would have been 17.8 per cent had the agency’s labour force survey counted among the unemployed the 1.1 million who stopped looking for work — likely because the COVID-19 economic shutdown has limited job opportunities.

But the lockdown hasn’t hit all industries with the same intensity. Global's Abigail Bimman joins us to explain which sectors of the Canadian economy have bourne the brunt of the COVID-19 job losses thus far.

One might answer that we are in an emergency so the normal laws have been temporarily suspended for our safety. However, suspending the rules is only a feature of dictatorship, not the rule of law. Under the rule of law, the laws prevail no matter what!

you forgot to include the part where Trudeau was asked if he was going to stand up to China and not be a CCP puppet, and he mumbled nonsense and walked away from the podium.

One job loss needed in Canada... Trudeaus job. Seriously its baffling he hasn't been removed and or arrested. This is why voting for a father's last name sake is a horrid decision.

This proves teachers we’re wrong. Students can use online courses. And less teachers are needed.

We really need to push the Government to help the most vulnerable at this time. Ontario Works pays monthly $735.00, Ontario Disability Support Program pays monthly $1169.00. We need to stop shaming these people and give them at least enough to make ends meet. The average 1 bedroom unit in Ontario is $1400.00. This leaves a person forced to use credit, and this is not allowed under the current program. Canada needs a Universal Basic Income program NOW and not CERB as it is very flawed .

Small business owners who bought their own facilities will have trouble catching up in mortgage payments. Many jobs are gone and people don’t seem to get it. The second thing is would you trust that a government would not do this again. This will slow down start up businesses
