Adding a custom staircase to my loft made completely out of framing studs. Custom staircases can be very expensive, using basic materials from your local home improvement store, you can do it at a fraction of the cost.

man you are single-handedly making the price of 2x4's go up with each video

I'm most impressed that he was able to find enough 2x4s that were straight enough to do this.

Says custom made staircases are too expensive, proceeds to make a staircase out of $20k worth of 2x4s

I would recommend planing each side of the 2x4 before glue up, fresh cut wood has a better glue bond, then old cut

Reminds me of the wood shop in school back in the 80's. Our shop teacher taught us a lot, and one summer, we built an entire building behind the School. It was fun to build it .

Wait a minute.... you have a planer on site and you didn't run the 2x4s through it before glue up? You know that removing that thin weathered layer makes your glue up like 4x stronger and also alternating end grain direction will have a huge impact on reducing the tendency for cupping in the future.

“Stairs are expensive and out of my budget…. So let’s make stairs the most expensive way possible”

Every big box store near me has nothing but banana boards. I am most impressed that you actually have straight boards to glue together in the first place

That's how DIY goes. Start by trying to save money, end up spending twice as much.

Part two will be made when my $30, 000 staircase equity loan is approved.

Extravagant, most expensive treads I've seen.
good for you.
Edge to edge glueing, looks just as good, at a lot less cost and not as wasteful.

I'm here for the ride. Was a trim Carpenter for many years. Many staircases in my day. They are most difficult.

Has a planer, doesn’t run boards through it before glueing. Genius.

Lots of negative comments from people who don't understand that fir and spruce are the hardest of softwoods and are perfectly acceptable for flooring and stair applications.
This is a great video for promoting less expensive solutions, which, in turn, generate work/income.
Keep doing what you're doing!🙂
