I take this for its literal meaning. If there would be a famine of hearing the word, and people would travel in every direction and not find it, that has to mean that his true gospel and authority is not found on the earth. This is so easy… so then what is left you might ask? The answer is the philosophies of men sprinkled with some scripture, not the true doctrine of Christ. Seek and ye shall find.
