This sounds more like Michael Stipe and REM than any of their later stuff. I like some of their later songs, but this era was when they were great.

I can't believe that a song that has a torrent of human emotion in it is just about skyscrapers and acid rain. It feels like Stipe is unloading all his emotional baggage and giving it back to the world. The melody is sweet, it's romantic and it's so powerful. It's definitely one of REM's most iconic and great songs. I loved it the first time I heard it and nothing's changed 36 years later. There are not too many songs around like that! This is a song that really makes me love music.

Possibly their best song, probably their best album, absolutely their best years. 1981-1987.

I love R.E.M. they have so many great songs and I never get tired of them.

I love the layered vocals and harmonies in this song, together with the jangly guitar I think it's the quintessential REM sound.

Harri, I love R.E.M. You can just react to anything and everything by them. Their lead singer, Michael Stipe, leaves it to each person to interpret their lyrics as we see them. There are no definites! ✌️🎶

Yeah, it’s about environmentalism: we buy and sell the sky, so to speak, and then have the nerve to ask the sky not to fall on us. “What is it up in the air for/if it’s there for long/it’s over it’s over me” is the first backing vocal and you can just hear Bill in the background doing a second background of “it’s gonna fall.” My favorite part. We used to LIVE for a chance to see an REM video on 120 Minutes back in the day at MTV.

If you want to know what this song is about you need to read the speech by Chief Seattle. It’s quit sad because he’s asking the US government to care for the land “you can’t buy the sky and sell the sky. “ If I give you this land please take care of it. Unfortunately the have not.

Great tune about environmental issues and acid rain. Sadly not many advances have been made since this song came out and we are increasing every day.
Fine tune by REM. Great reaction Harri.
Thanks Harri and Craig. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

I love the older REM songs like this. Just before they went outrageous with their image and wrote less serious songs like shiny happy people. Thanks for checking them out Harri,

Great to see a reaction to something besides "Everybody Hurts" and "Losing My Religion". There's a wealth of great music by this band that normally does not receive the reaction treatment...

I like this song too, it is another great composition. After my wife died (July1994) I felt that the 'sky' was the burdens of the world as I was now a single parent and it helped that in some weird way that someone else understood what it meant to have to carry the weight of the world. The sky fell on me at least for my family. I never worried about it being air pollution. Plants need CO2 and without plants we will all die from lack of Oxygen.

I'll add to the chorus of praise for this song. One of my favourites of that era and more generally. Cuyahoga is another great song.

This song is from this band’s best period. The music has always given me a 60’s vibe.

"Fall on Me" was the lead single from their fourth studio album, Lifes Rich Pageant, released in 1986. The song that follows it on the record, "Cuyahoga", draws on the times the heavily polluted Cuyahoga River caught fire near Lake Erie at Cleveland, Ohio. "Buy the sky and sell the sky \ And bleed the sky and tell the sky \ Don't fall on me" -- en, Chicken Little? The lyric in the bridge points to an explanation of the video -- "Well, I would keep it above \ But then it wouldn't be sky anymore" -- notice how the video for a song about the sky falling only ever shows the ground? The only hint of sky is in the reflection off a puddle of water. Broken concrete textures standing in for obscure cloud formations, with train tracks in place of contrails. R.E.M. may have incorporated the lyrics into the video in response to comments about the sometimes inscrutable lyrics in their earlier work. "Bury magnets \ swallow the rapture \ lets gather feathers" -- and never abandon poetry.

Can’t help but tune in to watch any REM reaction. This one’s a favourite and definitely worth playing again and again.

Hi Harri, my daughter did this song for her school play♥I'm a Musician and I was so proud of her😁I think it's about how corporations are building big buildings and the growing rise in population it all feels chocking and feeling it's all falling in on us

You're spot on with the analysis. It's about capitalism and the ruining of the earth. "Buy the sky and sell the sky" and Mills' counter-melody "what is it up in the air for?". I think Stipe said he was specifically thinking of acid rain, hence "don't fall on me".

One of my favorite songs by any artist. There's a couple of incredible live versions of this song that are absolutely gorgeous.

You're killing me. REM is my favorite band next to Pink Floyd. Michael is just pire gold when he writes and conveys the feeling through his voice. So many songs to uncover. Half a World Away, You are Everything, World Leader Pretend, Low, Walk Unafraid, and more. The song is about war, bombs falling. You dont see many reactors do REM but they have an amazing catalog of music!
