How it works with Nether portal vs overworld: ratio is 1:8 (for X and Z, it ignores height/elevation since overworld is 256 high and nether is 128 aka if you are at 80X/80Z up top, it will create the portal at 10/10 in the nether (or close to it depending on hills, lava, etc). Then portals will link up to 128 blocks away (either side). That means if a new top side house is within 1024 blocks of the original and you make a new portal, you will likely arrive in the first nether portal, then go back through and it will port you back to starter house. To link to the new house, make another portal close to equivalent 1:8 location in the nether.
Example: starter house at 80/80, nether at 10/10. New house at 800/800, in the nether it is still within 128 of original portal (800 divided by 8 is 100, 100-10=90, 90 is less than 128), so in the nether you need to move close to 100/100 and build a new portal with obsidian to link to the 800/800 house. Then once that is done, use whatever you have for an enclosed tunnel (nether dirt works fine since it blocks outside view of your movement) and use a walkway or rails to link between them.
