I COMPLETELY agree about this.

I do weddings and some older photographers will insist on using flash and softboxes for sunset to "correctly" fill the shadow side of the couple facing the camera.

For me, the natural shade the couple will
create is a feature, not a flaw, and it emphasises the bright sunlit background.

First dances, speeches and dancefloor photos though. They get the flash in various ways to build depth and or simply make enough light.
