"I broke my back. My back is broken. Spinal." - M. Tyson

You can see his lumbar spine catastrophically curving even on lower weights. He did not have the strength to lift these weights. This is why form does matter. I hope he gets better.

This guy was completely muscling up the weight with his lower back with almost no legs involved. He drops his hips, but when the weight breaks off the floor, his hips have almost risen to their standing height again, and his knees are damn-near straight. Asking for it.

Normally I’d comment the usual Mike Tyson spinal joke but I hope this dude recovers well. That looked painful! The rehab and depression is going to be a long process! All the best to him

I’m squatting and deadlifting in the 405 range, wear belts on my top sets, and always sit at a weight I can handle with proper form. Your form is bound to break down when pushing weights you’ve never lifted before but that’s why I find recovery is important. Don’t lift heavy all the time, lift light one week, lift heavy the next week, lift even lighter, lift slightly heavier. Manage your deep recovery.

With this I hope my lifting career stays injury free, but when it comes to being a top athlete in any sport, injuries are bound to happen, and what matters matters is how responsible you’re being about it, and how well you can minimize your chance of injury

his technique was very very scary, he literaly tried to lift with his back only without involving the legs, his knees were almost straight and his back was almost parallel to the floor. i wish him a soon and full recovery and much more serious attention on the correct form.

been suffering from severe back pain for 3+ years after injuring it deadlifting a relatively light load (about 60% of my 1RM for 8 reps). at that stage I had already been lifting for about 6 years or so, and I thought my technique was ok. guess I just underestimated the weight or something.

I never stopped lifting, but I can't really progress on deadlift or squat anymore. I'm still far from my previous numbers, and I have accepted that I will never get back there and I will never have a pain-free week in my life. cherish your health bros, chronic pain is pure hell.

on a more positive note: that 4 plate bench is really close now though. I was benching a little under 3 plates when I hurt myself, and now I'm at 172.5 kg.

Had an identical experience lifting 400 lbs back when I was a teenager. Man, it looked exactly the same as in the video. Had been in back pain for a three years prior the incident. The result was herniated discs on L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels and took 2 surgeries because I had severe nerve damage on both legs (unable to extend the toes and flexing the calf muscles), been on a hospital bed for a week before the surgery on a cocktail of corticosteroids and made zero progress. Four mounts after surgery I was able to return to the gym and to heavy lifting again, before that I have pain working out, but after surgeries I was like a new man, no pain while sitting it was like a miracle. Managed to beat all my PRs at 30 lbs lower body weight. But in 2022 pain turned up again, things progressively went south and this January I underwent my third back surgery (again L5-S1). Calf muscle heals slowly, but it is not strong enough yet to run. Don`t know if I can make it again to the gym. Ironically, it a total of 10 years lifting experience I have never pain or injury in anything except my back.
People, don`t do dumb shit and neglect the form. Nothing halters lifting progress more than being in pain not able to train as frequent or as on the way you want to train. Some day you may set PR, the other you can`t even warm up and it becomes a visions circle.
Hope the man from the video makes a full recovery!

0:23 - His hips are basically at standing height while the lift has not been completed yet. He was using his back

Deadlifts are a great exercise but you have to respect the movement. Improper technique and You can seriously hurt yourself. I love the movement but recently stopped doing them. The risk versus reward is a bit too much for me now that I’m in my 40s. I’ve strained my back before from doing them and takes me out from lifting sometimes weeks to fully recover. If you insist on doing them please make sure your technique is spot on and don’t ego lift

Your goal is to be healthy, fit, and strong not to impress others

This is why I don’t dead lift or do squats not because I don’t want to but because of the fear of something happening to my back people can say oh not if you use proper form all day however 1 mistake is all it takes and I’m not willing to take that chance theirs other ways to work back and legs but those 2 exercises I fear because I know what can happened

His lower back was already bent up even on lower weights before he started to lift. Literally set him self up for it

Deadlifts and squats were my favorites as a young lifter 17-25. I don’t touch them at all anymore, my back can’t handle it. Never had a bad injury but degenerative disc issues keep my back always letting me know to take it easy.

I heard of a dude who tried to do the iron cross on the rings and his chest bone snapped right through the middle. And I mean vertically through the middle. He didn't die or anything, but the guys who were there at the moment told me that you could literally hear the snap. I don't know if he's made full recovery, but I hope he did.

It would be great to get Mark Rippetoe’s analysis and commentary on this. Hope this guy makes a full recovery.

I have wondered for a long time how bones aren’t broken more often with the heavy weight being lifted these days. I wish him a speedy and full recovery.

Looks like I’ll be sticking to high reps on deadlift. If my form starts going, I’m done.

I blame it on his form. He was pretty much doing an RDL.
