The best solution for Desktop storage would be a NAS to be honest, Kobol has a nice one which can also connect via usb type c, or you could get a Synology variant for double the price.

with regards to the desktop storage you really should look into a high speed nas instead. that way you can have better data practices and make sure you have redundencies in place etc.
