The combined impacts of climate change, conflict, and the COVID-19 pandemic have only exacerbated the situation. As we face crisis after crisis, child poverty can feel inevitable. But it is not, we just need decisive efforts to address it.

At UNICEF, we focus on understanding which children and families live in poverty, promoting their right to social protection, and ensuring that adequately financed social services reach them – particularly the most marginalized, girls, children with disabilities, or living in humanitarian contexts.

I know all about this. When Mommy was a little girl, she was very poor. She was born in Laos, which is in Southeast Asia. She and her siblings and parents were very poor and only ate natural foods. And they had to carry heavy loads of laundry to the river. When Mommy was 8 years old, her mother was pregnant with a baby boy, my uncle Air. When Air was born, he wasn't a healthy color, so he was named Sisombath, which means "the color of death." When Mommy and her family moved to America, Mommy learned how to speak English and she also learned how to cook. Now, Mommy and her siblings are living normal lives. Air is now a school janitor and is very popular with all the teachers in the school he works at. When Mommy's best friend Reuben was a little boy, he was very poor. He was born in Kenya, which is in Africa. When he came to America, he learned how to speak English. Reuben is now a soldier in the navy. Reuben's real name is Chege.
