Did Boeing Make The 757-300 Too Long?

You won’t find a more controversial difference within the same aircraft product line than with the Boeing 757-200 and Boeing 757-300. Why is one loved and the other hated? Is it because the Boeing 757-300 is just too long? Let’s find out.

I’m a coordinator. I work at United Airlines, we usually work on the 757-200, until a week ago. I had to service one. But this one was particular, it was longer, and it seemed like it took forever to walk down the aisle. At that moment, I realized that this particular aircraft was the 757-300. I was so amused, it looks like a flying pencil😃😃🙆🏽‍♂️

The 757 is a great airplane. Every time I've flown on one, it seems it has a gentle take-off without a scary vertical, hold-onto-your hats, feeling. It's just a nice
lift-off with a moderate climb. I tend to agree that an updated 757 or similar design would be good for Boeing. For a long time, it was the most fuel-efficient jetliner in the skies. What did Boeing have to replace it? I think their thinking was the Max-10 would be the answer, which would have been accurate at the time.

We called it The Slave Ship when I was a flight attendant..lol
It reminded us of a Roman Barge!
It was hard to work since it was sooo long.

I have flown on both. The passenger experience on the 200 vs the 300 was negligible. I even sat at the back and noticed no difference, possibly because I wasn't paying attention to that, but also because my focus was getting to destination. The 300 works just fine for me.

The 757-300 is the one and only the "✏️ Jet"

I flew on a Thomas Cook 757-300 in 2011. Frankfurt to Halifax, our original 767 had engine issues and it was replaced by the pencil! We had to stop for fuel in Shannon Ireland in order to make the hop against the jet stream. Neat experience.

Count me as one of the people that HATED this aircraft. Way too long to board and deplane. I'm sure the 12 in first, with thier own door thought it was great.

I flew in one from Los Angeles to Honolulu and back and felt it exactly alike the -200.
No big deal with boarding. Great airplane. It should be built again with new engines
and avionics.

I rode on the 757-300 several times. Boarding is an experience. When you enter from the boarding doors ahead of row 12, it looks and feels just like any other 757. Then you turn right and say, "Wow, that's a long aisle." You keep moving past the first overwing exit, the second set of doors, underneath the overhead rafts, and then you come to your first mystery: a second set of window exits, but this one with no wing. Turns out the 757-300 is so long that Boeing was required to add another set of overwing exits, but there's only one wing, so they installed the airliner equivalent of a suicide door. Airlines don't mind because they can upsell the exit row seats.

As you pass the 12th set of doors, you realize that you're back in first class somehow. The airplane is so long that it has actually looped back around on itself. You make your way back down the aisle and finally find your seat: 137A. That's when you look up and realize what a lucky SOB you are. There's another 2/3rds of a plane back there.

I flew on the 757-300 and 757-200 both on Delta. I personally liked my experience on the 757-300 more because Delta placed newer seats, IFE screens, and a new bathroom in the plane, but it took forever to board. When I was on the -200, it took much shorter to board but the plane was not nearly as nice. On the -300, it was really cool to walk to the back of the plane because there is a galley towards the rear, but that is where the -200 would normally end, so you could see the extra seats on the -300. It looked like someone stuck a tail onto the -200.

I'm rated in the 757-300, and commanded it once. We ordered ONE. I brought it down from Commercial Airplane Division -- and was never assigned an itinerary which featured it. It's not a particularly graceful hull, but it does the job. It's range is too short for trans-Atlantic work...
