The MTB guy actually had an accident on his first try where his bike broke right down the middle half way down. He miraculously survived and it was later discovered that there was a sudden elevation change near the point his bike broke. That's also why you see him leaning so far back on his successful attempt. It was to reduce the load on the frame when the bike hits the point of change.
There are stories behind each of these records, and all of them deserve our respect.
