How to befriend a Brushtail Possum: Step 1. Let it SNIFF the back of your hand #possum #wildlife

If you would like to become mates with an Australian Possum like this wild 'common brushtail possum,' named 'Ned:' the first step is to let the possum sniff you, by putting the BACK of your hand up to within its reach - as I do in this video - letting it 'close the distance' and sniff your hand.
It may try and bite you, so you can be ready to pull your hand away.
Don't offer it the palm of your hand to sniff because the Aussie possum will see your fingers and thumb and through curiosity will bite one.

Possums use smell to communicate with other possums, mark territory, announce availability for mating, nest selection, food detection, and to remember who you are and if you are friendly / are likely based on past experiences to have food.

I should highlight, Australian possums do bite, so probably don't do this and be very careful if you do.
Do you have possums where you live? What is your experience?

I dont recommend that anyone do this. While they arent aggressive animals they have very sharp claws. A lot of people make the mistake of hand feeding them and getting their hands injured in the process.
