Berber Exploitation (1997): A look at how the culture of the Berbers has been exploited and suffocated.

For centuries the Berbers of Morocco have been persecuted by their Arab masters. Today even their festivals have been hijacked. Miriam is fighting to keep her language and culture, whilst fellow militant Zaid claims the Arabs have 'stolen our history.' Etched out of a beautiful, yet inhospitable and rugged land, stands Imichil, where the annual marriage market or Moussem des Fiances takes Place. It's here that the Arab government has turned an exclusive Berber celebration into a tourist fest. Shy young brides wander around the market in traditional veils as streetwise city slickers sell trinkets and souvenirs to dollar laden foreigners. The Arabs have encouraged the press to come and soak up the traditional atmosphere It's turned into objects of curiosity in the process. Hussein and his wife to be, were forced to attend the festival in order to obtain a marriage certificate. Fascinating look at a culture being silenced and yet exploited for its rich and colourful traditions.

As a pure amazigh it aches my heart to have not leaned the language and have been bullied in school for being of Amazigh origins. Now that I am out of the country, I am finally being able to research the history of my ancestors and hopefully one day be able to be proud as I should be to be a Tamazight.

As an amazigh woman it pains me to watch them being paraded like circus. In all parts of Maghreb our culture is suffocating, but we will survive as we always did for a10 000 of years!

I was stationed at Sidi Slimane Air Base from 1957 to 1959 in Morocco and I became very fond of the Berbers, we meet some in the Atlas Mountains who were going to fight the French In Algeria. They
were very friendly to us and invited us into their homes which were actually huts. Familes are a
big part on their life and the men can be fierce fighters as the French know.

"How come we have no history?" Is he out of his mind?
Has he not heard of the berber kings Jugurtha and Juba in antiquity? Mauretania and numidia, trade with the phoenicians in carthage, The berber sultanates of morocco like the Almoravids and Almohads, to be fair the moroccan government is oppressing not only the berbers but all moroccans. The king should be deposed but I fear there will be turmoil afterwards.

One thing that my amazigh mother from morocco told me is that some of the berbers of morocco before were jews and then converted to Islam. This is a very interesting fact.

I’m half Moroccan and been there a couple times as a child. “Berber” was used as an insult, and I was told they were cheap. My cousins used to tease each other for having Berber blood. Turns out we were all berbers.
