My boyfriend is quadriplegic but we still have amazing sex – I'm his full-time carer too

A young couple have gone viral after sharing details of their relationship on social media in the hopes of debunking myths around disability and sex.
George Dowell from West Sussex, first caught the eye of his girlfriend Jessikah Lopez, 29, after he appeared as a contestant on the Channel 4 show The Undateables.
The 30-year-old was paralysed from the chest down following a horrific car accident in 2010, when the vehicle flipped and he sustained a spinal injury.
George has "limited hand and arm function" and while first adjusting to his new life – and being disabled – worried about how other people would react, including rejection from women when dating.
“The car flipped and landed in the field opposite the road. I was the only one with severe injuries.
“Dating isn’t as easy when you’re in a wheelchair, because people automatically have assumptions about you or can’t see themselves with someone with a disability, so I often worried about being rejected straight away.
“In the early days it was hard but as I’ve got used to my life post-injury, I have had stable relationships and actively dated before I met Jessikah.”
The couple met on social media, after George slid into Jessikah's DMs.
"Then about two years later, George messaged me on Facebook in relation to a story I posted, we got chatting and the rest is history.
“Our first date, I went over to his house, brought lots of snacks and we watched movies.
"I got there at 12 and didn’t leave until 9pm, we had so much to talk about and got on really well.”
The duo are very much in love but admit that there have been challenges along the way.
Jessikah said: “Before I met George, I have always had an able-bodied boyfriend and had long term relationships.
"I never imagined I’d be with someone who had a disability but not because I wasn’t interested – I had just never come across any disabled singletons.
"Dating [George] felt the same as normal, the butterflies in your stomach, the awkward conversations that everyone has.
"I obviously had different questions to ask but never felt nervous, he was always so open and honest that I knew I could ask anything I needed to, which made me feel so at ease with him really quickly.
"At first I had to get used to having carers around a lot and of course learn different parts to help George out.
"I found it hard to settle in with other people constantly in and out of the house, which is why I now care for George full-time with one other carer so I can have days for myself too."
George said: "I never hid anything and was always upfront about my injury to make it easier for us both.
"I didn’t need to feel nervous around Jessikah because she made me feel so comfortable to be myself.
"We just got on so well.
"Because I met Jessikah so far down the line into my injury, I know what works well for me so it was easy to navigate around things that may seem different from the average couple.
"We were thrown into each others' lives quickly due to Covid and decided to bubble up together.
"We were able to tell early on that we could live together very easily, only adjustment I had to make was adjust my care plan so Jessikah was my primary carer because I wanted to have more independent and alone time with her as our relationship progressed."
Many people are often most curious about their sex life, assuming they don't have one.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Jessikah added: “We have a normal and healthy sex life.
"It’s different of course but nothing that can’t be overcome with good communication and working with each other to find out what works best, pretty much the same as any new partner.
“Most challenges in our relationship come from the outside world as it’s not built for people with disabilities and therefore can make things difficult for us at times.”
“We luckily have not had any negativity towards our relationship but we would certainly defend it if we did.”
