Are you an international medical graduate (IMG) who wants to pursue specialty training in the UK but are unsure where to start? Is it your dream as a doctor to enter postgraduate training/residency in the NHS?

This video is a part of a large course dedicated to providing the information you need to know regarding the postgraduate training pathway of a doctor in the UK. We cover many important topics such as how to find out the correct information regarding the specialty training pathway of your choice.

Unfortunately many times our efforts to find information and know what is correct is limited by hearsay rather than experience, but our course is run by Drs. Ibreez Ajaz and Ibrahim Ivan, who work as Internal Medicine Trainees in the NHS.

Specialty training as a doctor in the UK is not impossible. The pathway to become a specialist is different in different countries; that's why when you start comparing the structure of residencies in your own country to that of UK you may get confused.

In this lesson, Dr. Ibrahim Ivan has explained and compared the postgraduate specialty training in the UK in terms of other postgraduate degrees such as MD/MS/MSc for doctors and the roles these degrees play in your further specialty training.

1.Can international students apply for fellowship programs.

2. Between the fellowship program and Master degree, which confers more "practical know how" to the trainee. What is the masters program all about

Which pathway is more beneficial....to complete my MS overseas(I'm from India) and then go to UK for speciality training through MRCS or complete my MBBS and then go to UK and do FY2 programme and CST??

Also if I choose the 2nd pathway then will my surgical training be recognized as MS in India and will I be able to practice in India???

Thank you. It's not clear if doing a Masters degree can enable one to become a specialist, if one does not go the NHS training route. Could you please clarify that? My background is dentistry.

Hi, from what I have read, before applying for st 3 jobs in general surgery, one has to get their core competencies signed by a consultant. Assuming that is correct, could you please tell me whether it is possible for a non trainee to get their crest form signed for core competencies before completing their ct 2 equivalent year? As in, is it possible to get it signed before a full 24 months of core training or the equivalent?

Thanks very much!
