I guess one of the reasons the Resistance may not have more ship types is to make them look less like they're funded by the New Republic. If they had every ship for every scenario it could be more blatant they were getting help, but a handful of ageing X-wings that could have been stolen in one bulk would be harder to prove.

First Order wise they don't have the same resources as the Empire to make the prototypes for new ships, test them and build in bulk. I suspect they poured most of that workforce and money into Starkiller base, plus they don't want too infringe on that disarmament treaty too much and risk their weapon discovered too soon.

But after the destruction of the Hosnian system by Starkiller base that treaty would be void and the Republic doesn't have to be secret about supporting the Resistance. This would allow all sides to start building, supplying and modifying their own ships so, provided there's a seizable time gap between VII and VIII, we could see a lot more.

I honestly think that the reason for the lack of ship variety in episode VII is that they didnt want to mess up too much with the franchise and they played it safe repeating the same models of the original trilogy, only a little bit modified. I hope they will be more brave using new desingns in the the last two episodes.

I just watched this film again last night and heard that the resistance fleet is off else where and can not get back in time to intercept the Starkiller base that is why we do not see the main fleet. I wish i knew the time of when it comes, once I find out I'll post it.
