The 70Mai 1S is apparently the real successor to the original 70Mai dashcam - which became one of the most popular dashcameras ever – because of its good characteristics and convenient price.
Initial impressions from the box are bringing some memories back… yeah – unboxing is quite a nice and at the same time basic. Looks like visually changes are not that many – the main body, a dual-socket USB car charger, a mounting sticker, and the user guide.
Hardware is nothing too good, and well matches the pricepoint – a processor capable of handling fullHD recording, the 2-Megapixel Sony Starvis IMX 307 sensor, AI through the voice commands and a WiFi module.
There’s a small battery inside – 240mah, and I am quite confident in the camera’s well being when exposed to direct sunshine in hot days – used it during the hottest part of the year in Houston; no degradation of image quality, and no indication of overheating; And to that contributes the good quality of the plastic.
Installation of the cam takes literally a few minutes – find a good spot on the windshield. Because wiring only needs to reach your car’s cigar lighter, most people will be able to perform the installation themselves – here’s nothing that can go badly wrong.
will need your smartphone – to do the initial config. Start the dashcam, it will create a Wi-Fi hotspot that you need to connect to, and follow the setup. This can be done at home, before you actually perform the installation. A feature to highlight is the possibility to support cars that actually do not interrupt the power to the charger when the engine is off – and it is rare to see with most DashCams.
Through the app you can fine-tune most of the settings – not that they are too many – but things like recording sound or not – can be enabled or disabled.
You’ve seen some samples so far – and let’s analyze how it performs. The codec used seems to be the same as before – h.264 –with the special flavor of compression by 70mai, that my video editing software doesn’t come along with, and I had to encode the files before using them. Oversharpened – which exposes more noise, and oversaturated – and this is a usual state for many dashcams on the market. So far so good.
The lens has field of view of only 130° but picture is anyways distorted - You can see that everything looks quite bent at the edges – and having no aspheric lenses is usually providing that kind of effect. Detail level is good – the files bitrate is usually around 19-20Mbit – which is much higher than the usual for FULL hd and certainly the hardware is squeezed to the maximum .

I just installed this cam in my friend's Audi A5.You are spoiled for choice in this car for cigarette lighter sockets.The cable provided is quite long and tidies away nicely around the windscreen and through the panels.Connection to the phone took 10 seconds using the default password.The field of vision is incredible.Highly recommended.

Form factor of the dash cam is good and it looks nice. The footage is not great, but usable and acceptable for its price.

I have installed it and using this. The video quality is similar to VGA. Can't identify number plates at night or when driving fast at daytime. Don't mislead with these videos. I advice anyone to study this cam thoroughly before buying. There are lot of alternatives.

Great review, thank you. Question though, how about recording when the car is off? for example, what if a vehicle hits your car while its parked? will the built in battery kick in to record that few seconds? or it wont record anything at all?
