Focusing on the goal only leads to burnout every time. I'm a witness.

Very, very important. If you love the process, or at the very least like it, you'll see the light at the end of the tunnel.

This is why having an experienced mentor is so important, i would have never thought of it this way.
I have spent the last 4 years "Jumping" from one programming language or framework to another trying to best because i never felt like i was good enough to call myself a programmer even though i have certifications for my knowledge.

I have learnt multiple programming languages including Java, C# and Python but i never "mastered" any.

There are may tutorials online that teach how to code but your videos teach how to develop yourself as a mature professional working in the field of programming.

Always looking forward to "new wisdom" that you drop.
Thanks

We as living beings need rewards for the action that we take.

I guarantee, engineers that made it big we getting some kind of gratification during the road, whether it be money, positive comments, etc.

No reward = no progress

very good advice, thinking of the target every time makes me crazy. I try hard and then get exhausted and that breaks the flow.... and once it breaks, hard to get back.

Great advice, definitely. The main difficult i find in this approach (which i am trying to adopt on one of my side projects) is that daily goals seems useless if i consider them individually. As an example, i'm creating a digital product as a side project which even if it is a small product, it requires a lot of steps, i.e. writing documentation, making landing pages, etc...(a lot more i could have even imagined when i started!). If i consider the "whole" project, the whole goal, it becomes overwhelming but it has a reason to be achieved (the ultimate goal: selling a lot!), but if i take small individuals steps (focusing on the process) as an example writing documentation, it seems to be a boring and useless activity since it doesn't produce anything useful at the end of its completion: no sales, no money and some tasks even doesn't produce any new skill (at least apparently or at least no skills of direct interest) so it is hard for me to "believe" in the single task, or to focus on the process, since only the sum of all the single individual goals will lead to the ultimate one, but any single task (or at least a lot of them) doesn't provide any reward so it appears less motivating.

Amazing. I discovered your channel about 3 weeks ago, but your advice already helped me to advance significantly! What a great timing for that particular moment of my life! I am super-grateful, thanks soooo much!

Very well said Stef thanks for the post! This was perfect timing for me, as this is something that I struggle with regularly. I focus so much on becoming a programmer in the "end" that I often feel like I'm getting nowhere. I like the quote from the Lord of the Rings: "I feel like butter scraped over too much bread." Funny sounding I know, but true nonetheless! It's so much to take on and so overwhelming that I almost feel like Im going in circles. So that said, I'm going to change my process a bit and see if it helps me out! Thanks again!

Thank you, Stefan. You're fast becoming one of my favourite vloggers. Your videos are always balanced, informative and, importantly, clearly expressed. I always come away from watching one of your videos feeling more prepared to tackle the challenges in moving towards a more IT orientated specialisation. I'm taking a MOOC in introductory Python. As it seems to strike a nice balance between functionality and accessibility, so a nice first language to transition into a programming/problem-solving perception. Any way, thanks again, your videos are a great help.

This is really helpful. Really made me reconsider how I'm looking at my current end goal which is to be a professional developer. Thanks!

This is my problem, mentioned in another video. I understand the concept, but I am just overwhelmed by what I need to do in the everyday life (family) that I don't feel capable of applying this evergreen suggestion.

I'm reading one of Adams' books on system vs goal. It's very inspiring and useful now that I'm about to turn 30.
