Studies show physical reactions to negative stimuli in crabs may not be an automatic response. Do critters feel pain like humans?

Crabs feel pain
“Plunge a live crab into a pot of boiling water, and it’s likely to try to scramble out. Is the crab’s behavior simply a reflex, or is it a sign of pain? Many scientists doubt that any invertebrate (or fish) feels pain because they lack the areas in the brain associated with human pain.”

Crabs 'feel and remember pain' suggests new study
“The study, which was carried out by Professor Bob Elwood and Mirjam Appel from the School of Biological Sciences at Queen's University, Belfast, looked at the reactions of hermit crabs to small electric shocks. It was published in the journal Animal Behaviour.”

Is this really surprising that crabs feel pain?

I always thought this was true. Growing up my grandfather told me, "when we hunt we don't kill just for the hunt but the food. Don't go needlessly killing animals for fun." I gets I took to hear at some point and came to the conclusion no animal is much different than we are.

Do crabs feel pain? Scientists test this out by testing multiple torture methods on them...

Is there really a difference between "feeling" pain and reacting mechanically?  Maybe "pain" is just the name we give to the way we react and the type of defense mechanisms we use.  Besides, I can't know for certain if anyone other than myself feels the same pain I feel.

I never got the animals don't feel pain philosophy. Isn't the ability to detect damage in your body kinda necessary to survival.

Maybe it goes without saying but pain seems to be the way to tell a creature that something can harm it and therefore, they are programmed to avoid anything that causes painful experiences for their own survival. It doesn't necessarily mean they have the intelligence to understand what is going on to a point where strong emotions are involved, in which case it would be worth of our empathy.

Recent scientific research also show that plants can feel too. Eventually, people who refuse to eat anything with feelings will run out of things eat, except for food made with artificial chemicals.

Of course crabs feel pain! Lobsters too! Still won't stop me from eating them though! Shit, we feel pain too when animals try to eat us! So why shouldn't it be vice-versa?

If a robot is wired and programmed to avoid injury, it would likely display pain-guarding behaviour. Anything that simulates analgesics may be mistakenly perceived to be a healing agent, as it reduces pain reception. So, would that mean it suffers like arthropods?

Do all animals feel pain? I'll ask them that at our next meat and greet

To be fair, no predator besides us would care if their meal feels pain. The only reason why some kill it ASAP beforehand is because it's annoying to be kicked, pooped or stung in the face while eating.

Just because they feel pain does not mean that they experience it in the same way humans do.  My theory is that the simpler the animal, the more like a machine it is.  So, insects are basically like machines simply responding to their programming and can no more suffer than a computer can  I don't think crabs are much different.  Mammals on the other hand, I believe, have some level of emotion and can therefore experience the fear, agony and suffering that can come with pain.   By all means though, we should not make any creature suffer more than necessary.  So if in doubt, kill it as humanly as possible.

There is a way to eat crab without killing them. Crab claws will grow back, and crabs will detach their claws when put under stress. Just pick up a crab by a claw and it usually autotomizes its-self.
If you do it in the wild, its kind to leave them with one claw so it can still defend itself.
It takes longer to get a meal, but nothing dies and you still get to eat one of the most delicious meats.

This seriously sounds like something worthy of an Ignoble prize. NO SHIT ANIMALS CAN FEEL PAIN!

But it is important to note that crabs can detach their limbs as a survival mechanism to distract a predator and escape. If they felt pain like humans, this would not make sense from an evolutionary perspective.
