He's so great in the film. One of my favorite scenes in the entire movie is the one where Jesse James takes the knife to Robert Ford's throat and you see how Charley has to react to that, fearful for his brother's well-being but uncertain of how to act around James in the situation. The way he plays off of both Pitt and Affleck is so quietly compelling, often in just his facial reactions.

Love Samwell. But Casey rocked the shit of the role.

I know i am late to the party on this comment, but this is one of the most underrated movies of all-time. With some of the most underrated actors of all-time. Sam Rockwell, eventhough he has an Oscar is way underrated (great in The Green Mile, great in Matchstick Men, etc), Garrett Dillahunt is just a ridiculously good actor who gets zero recognition (how long did it take you to realize he played 2 diametrically opposed roles in Deadwood..don't lie). Btw...I haven't even mentioned the heavy hitters in this film (Brad Pitt. Sam Sheppard, Casey Affleck, and Jeremy Renner). The fact that this was a box-office bomb and stupid fake sci-fi comic book movies with zero plot rake in millions shows how bad American audiences are for actual real acting and story telling (fyi I'm American). The book is amazing. The soundtrack is exquisite (Nick Cave). Roger Deakins cinematography is insane (the fact that he didn't win his first Oscar until his 14th nomination is an absolute joke...1917...his 2nd win... may be the best cinematography ever). Nominated for only 2 Oscars and no win....really?. If you haven't seen this movie and have the time (it's long and should have been longer)...do yourself a favor and watch it ASAP. Just Affleck's performance is worth it, and like usual, Pitt is absolutely amazing. It's sad that 15 years later, there is no way this movie is made today...no f'ing way. Millennials wake the F up, characters don't have to shoot lighting bolts from their eyes to be interesting. Also, have an attention span for more than 5 seconds (I'm Gen X). This is all around art at its finest!

No WAY Ryan Gosling would have been as good as Casey Affleck.

Edit: And that movie had the best combination of character actors I’ve ever seen together.

I really imagined Gosling as Bob Ford in the first scenes so it makes sense they were considering him

Sam played that character brilliantly.
Charlie Ford's Death scene was probably the saddest scene for me in the entire movie, it also was probably the most beautiful shot off the entire movie.

Rockwell was actually perfect for Charlie. They all were. Schneider was so incredible as Dick Liddil and likewise Jeremy Renner as Wood Hite that when I read about the James gang I often find myself picturing the actors instead of the real people. They really were that excellent. No wonder they were so picky about the casting, it definitely paid off.

Casey Affleck was without a doubt the best for it, there is no question about it. Have you ever seen a real photo of Ford? Look one up. Casey could easily be his direct descendant, the resemblance is that striking. He looks more like the real Robert Ford than he does his brother Ben.
