Interesting. So both 32 bit versions of Windows 8 and 10, kept 700Mb of RAM content in Paging File, as physical RAM capped out. That would mean that even with 1GB you're still using Paging File and constantly writing to disk, as total RAM capacity needed here was around 1.2GB
I remember days on Windows XP when running OS, listening to internet radio, having firefox opened with few pages and some background tasks, was barely using 512Mb.
Progress is one thing, but it seems that programmers are getting lazy and not optimizing things well enough.

Windows 95, Windows XP and Windows 7 gave best performance on 512 MB Ram

I think 512mb is the maximum ram for Windows 95 along with 98 & Me. Windows 2000 & XP finally expanded that amount but still runs fine at 512mb. Vista requires 512mb as the minimum & Windows 7 needed 1gb ram which you can kinda see it's starting to struggle a bit.

It is wrong to test on an emulator. I have similar characteristics, namely: Celeron D 336, ATI Radeon x550 256 mb, RAM DDR1 512 mb. Windows XP is going well, but it lags in the browser. Windows 7 pro is also going fine, but it also lags in the browser, you can play some old games, but in GTA:SA 20-30 fps

4gigs is the sweet spot. It is recommended for most users, it can open a plenty of chrome tabs (no joke did that on my inspiron) and gaming is like, on one end, a little laggy, but jumping works ok. 4gb can also run video editing apps (totally not davinci resolve). Overall, I have been okay while working with 4gb ram but if you don't want explorer sometimes crashing, or laggy context menus, I would recommend 4gb. But if you're trying to upgrade for the first time, check if your current amount is enough for you.

I just installed it on an old laptop that only has 512MB. It is not doing well at all. The CPU is 1.8GHZ, well above Microsoft's recommended 1GHZ. Everything takes minutes to accomplish. Installing a program, even just loading a webpage. It originally came with Vista and I'm pretty sure I had XP on it at one point. It never behaved like this. I was thinking about adding another 512 to bring it up to the recommended amount, the laptop's max capacity. But at this point I don't think would make enough of a difference.
