ExoMars Arrival Update - One Crash, One Successful Orbiter

It's half good news, half bad news for ESA and Roscosmos as the Trace Gas Orbiter successfully placed itself in orbit around Mars while the Schiaparelli Lander has almost certainly been lost.

"There are probably now 2 Schiaparelli craters on Mars"

Shots fired.

Hey, I can't blame the ESA. I've crashed tons of spacecraft into Duna.

ESA accidentally clicked the "return to space center" button...

Martian 1: " You think we should make contact with earth?"
Martian 2: " No, all they do is throw their trash in our front yard."

I told them to press F5 before entering the atmosphere. I told them, but they didn't listen.

Do you think one day there will be a business hunting down old, crashed landers for archaeology?

Ah, well. It didn't all go wrong, so there's that. 1 spacecraft succeeded, 1 failed. Kerbal Space Center would consider that a good mission.

Always appreciate your quick recaps of these little things. Thankyou

So, in a nutshell, never name your lander after a crater.

Sounds like the dust storm made the sensors get inaccurate feed back on altitude. Which would make sense if you have just about any type of "ground detection" sensor as the dust storm would create a lot of above ground feedback.

Thanks for the Update! I would like to make two corrections though: Exomars was launched on a Proton, not a Soyuz and Andrea Accomazzo, said in the News Conference this morning CEST that pretty much all the AMELIA data was transmitted (AMELIA is the instrument studying the Martian Atmosphere during descent).
Love your Videos!

So, ESA created another Schiaparelli crater (great pun btw). My guess (with the information given in this video) would be that somehow the Lander thought it is closer to the surface than it really was, therefore it detached the parachute and ignited the engines. The engine cut off (naturally) and well, 90 secs (length of resttransmission) martian gravity against our little lander? Probably didn't end well. Shame...

5:08 Wait, seriously? On Titan? I didn't know about this! Now I absolutely want to know more about that mission.

I love how I can rely on you for decent space news.

They really shouldn't call the lander after a crater.

who would dislike a video of this nature. it is what it is. unapologetic, and informative. take it as it is.
