You can also do halftones on the first fill layer you did. If you go under layer settings there is a option to turn the layer to halftone mode, you can change the angle of the dot, the shape and the size/density of them. I've used it before to make heart shaped halftones

I’ve also been doing a combination of solid color for shadows underneath a layer of halftones. I forgot to turn off the original shadows and ended up liking the look
