Ichigo's inner Hollow asks if Ichigo knows the difference between a king and his horse. If there are two beings with the same appearance, ability, and power, one becomes the king and the other becomes the horse. The reason for this is simple: instinct. The person who becomes king needs to want to fight, to want power, and to mercilessly crush his enemies. Ichigo's Hollow side accuses him of using reason to fight and feels that Ichigo cannot hurt anyone if his sword is still in its sheath. Claiming that this is why Ichigo is weaker, the inner Hollow throws his Zangetsu into Ichigo's abdomen. Ichigo's inner Hollow says that he will not let a king weaker than him ride on top of him, and since Ichigo is weaker, the Hollow is going to destroy him to become the king

🔹About Hollow Ichigo:

Zangetsu (斬月, Slaying Moon) is the manifested spirit of Ichigo Kurosaki's Zanpakutō as well as his inner Hollow. He has been variously called Hollow Ichigo (虚 (ホロウ) 一護, Horō Ichigo), more properly called The Hollow within Ichigo (一護の内面 (ないめん) の虚 (ホロウ), Ichigo no naimen no Horō) or White Ichigo (白一護, Shiro Ichigo).
Zangetsu is the result of the fusion between the Hollow White Ichigo inherited from his mother and the Shinigami powers he inherited from his father. He has stated himself to represent Ichigo's purest instincts.

“And I’m not talking about obvious stuff, like one’s and animal and one’s a person or one has two legs and one has four, form ability and power; that’s what’s puzzling, if there form, ability and power are exactly the same, why is it that one becomes the king and leads them to battle while the other becomes the horse and carries the king; so what’s the characteristics that distinguishes these two beings? There’s only one answer INSTINCT!”

“In order for identical beings to get stronger and gain power, they need to develop a killer instinct, and that instinct is mostly forged in battle!”

“They must develop an insatiable hunger to engage in battle; they must live to mercilessly crush, shred and slice their enemies, this thirst for power is not a unnatural desire, in fact it forms the very essence of our beings; deep within our body lies the whole instinct to dominate and slaughter our enemies. My friend you don’t have that, you try to use your brain to win a fight, you attempt to defeat your enemies with reason and logic, you don’t tap into those pure base instincts that exists within your core waiting to be released!” “And the simple matter is that it doesn’t work, your weak ICHIGO!, I won’t put up with that, am I clear?” “I don’t know about Zangetsu, but I refuse to play horse to a king who’s weaker than me, someone who’s uncertainty and hesitation will end up getting us both cut to pieces. If you aren’t willing to assert your strength and retain the crown, then I’ll destroy you.” Which mean’s I’ll be king.“- Hollow Ichigo.

Every time we see White Zangetsu, there was always hints he was the zanpakuto. Not him blatantly calling himself Zangetsu, but the fact that every time we see him, he is teaching Ichigo something or saving his life. He is always a mentor and a guardian, but his personality makes him seem like an antagonist. Fucking love him and I hate that I never guessed he may actually be a zanpakuto before I found out from the manga.

This speech alone makes White Zangetsu the best inner demon in anime, no other one of em ever gave a speech that felt this cold

A few weeks later Ichigo lies on the ground with a hole in his chest and Hollow actually did take over. Epic foreshadowing.

I heard this speech years ago and ive only really realized what it meant a few years ago when i went to therapy. My life issues were so bad, it felt like a part of me was taking control. Some nasty ho pushed my buttons in just the right way and i started screaming at her. The thing is, i NEVER do that. That was the first in the 29 years ive been alive. The instant after it happened, i recalled my therapist telling me 'if im attacked in an area thats sensitive, a part of me would lash out to protect me.' I scoffed at this because i had never done that. I was wrong. Then later i remembered when ichigo fought byakuga and i put two and two together. Hollow ichigo took over and started crushing byakuga. He really was trying to protect ichigo in his berserking madness like the part of me that was trying to protect me.

I really believe this speech to be real like my therapists words. If you let your problems pile up, your mind may act out to protect you. Even against your own will. Keep you life in order/ be strong and you can keep the pieces of your self from trying to take your crown. Stay in charge of you. YOU. ARE. THE. KING.

This speech is actually the biggest clue on what the speaker is. He is a representation of the soul, knowing all the secrets it contains. He knows Ichigo's instincts to do battle exist, because they exist within him and him trying to ask Ichigo, by pressing hard on "Form, ability and power" being the puzzling part. He knows that Ichigo should be stronger as long as he retains his instinct to dominate himself and move forward. Even his motive is made clear, he wants to continue existing, that is his instinct, to make sure Ichigo survives, even if it means taking away his freewill and body.
