Tim Carter demonstrates how to install a magical tar and chip driveway.

Through bolts make for a better connection than lag bolts. Lag bolts are unacceptable because if the installer over tightens them, the wood fibers get shredded by the coarse threads and the connection becomes very weak.

Through bolts work much like iron rivets when connecting steel plates. Rivets are time-tested connection and work well.

I use clamps to hold the frame against the post and then drill pilot holes through the frame board and partially into the post. I then finish drilling the holes necessary for the carriage bolts, hammer the carriage bolts into the frame until about a quarter of an inch is punched through the other side and then line everything up and hammer through the posts. Works pretty well.

Very good info. I am planning to buy a pair of carriage bolts, to hold two pieces of 2x4 together. The length of the 2x4 is cut down to 26 inches. How many bolts do I need, and what gauge should they be? Can I space them one feet apart ? Thanks.

AlrightThanks

What is the strength of a carriage bolt over a standard bolt, washers, and a nut? Would the washer not give as much strength? Or is it better to use the carriage bolt with wood? I made a loft bed and Im looking to connect the bed frame to the posts. I was wondering if I should use standard bolts with washers and ntus or the carriage?

Im using 6×6 post with 2×6 frame would this be good to use for my porch cover? I'd have to get a 10inch bolt right?

Can you add these into 4x4 crossslaps? Seems like it would be good to hold together and also remove them if needed?

How do you get bolt snugged down without stripping out the wood?

I will be screwing 2x10 splices to 2x10s that are fixed, or already nailed down. Do I start the screws in the splices or start the screws into the 2x10s that are already nailed in place? Thank you.

it doesn't have to be a carriage bolt it could be a hex head bolt . carriage bolts may start spinning in the wood making it impossible to tighten .
aside from that the holes should be staggered to minimize the possibility of splitting

Telling us and actually physically showing how to install it are totally different. Unfortunately, telling how it's installed doesn't really help first timers.

I nail the frame on with a nail to hold it in place and then drill.
