The sad Henry vacuum in the house got me 8:46.

We need a collaboration with Big Clive.

I've just read your piece on your website about Rex, and it's so upsetting that he suffered Dementia, such a brilliant mind, broken by such a dreadful disease. I love the fact that you dedicate the videos to Rex, someone you clearly had huge respect and affection for, as did many others who've seen his creations and would have loved to have spent just an hour or two with him.

It's interesting to note that while the first LED tubes did use a connection to each end, they later switched to feeding the power from one end due to the number of shocks received by people replacing tubes while powered. Traditional tubes didn't generally conduct from one end to the other until the gas had been ionised. To allow for the existing wiring they sometimes used a PTC self resetting fuse bridging the pins at one end and a starter that had a link in it so that the existing circuit with bypassed ballast would ultimately feed live and neutral to one end.
Other tubes require the fitting to be wired with live and neutral at one end and will only work one way round.

Back in the day I used to skip school occasionally specifically to watch The Secret Life of Machines. Thank you for continuing your educational and entertaining videos.

Tim's zombies looked so loveable. Another fascinating video. TBH, I find watching Tim kind of relaxing .. a little mental vacation ..

I'm in that weird part of YouTube where Tim Hunkin and Big Clive collide.

I couldn't wait to get off work so I could watch this. It's strange because I realized I haven't been excited about an upcoming TV show or movie in well over a decade.

Mr Hunkin, it is awesome to see you are still helping us understand “the secret world of machines” . It’s great to see you again. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. The world needs more gentle craftsman like Tim Hunkin.

I remember when your show first came out. I have been searching for a long time, and you are back again. Your freedom to test things, no safety gear etc., was wonderful. Rex, as you, are heroes to us. Alan, retired aerospace engr.

I’m ten years old again watching The Secret Life of Machines.

In my graduate research we overdrove LEDs with short pulses of high currents in order to take advantage of the spectral shift. Too large of a duty cycle would turn a Light Emitting Diode into an FED: Flame Emitting Diode. ;-)

I'm old enough to remember "The Secret Life of..." great
Glad Tim has a Rex and Graham tribute in the credits, they helped to make the programs so much fun to watch.

This. Is. Amazing. As a kid, I watched The Secret Life of Machines every time it aired, often while taking something apart and/or tinkering. Thank you, Mr. Hunkin for taking the time to make new content. You are a legend.

As ever, Hunkin is irresistible: informative, a paragon of common sense, effort, imagination, lore, learning and intelligence.
And humour! Each zombie in his arcade machine is staring at a Smartphone like… a zombie.
Satire, genial and gentle, in electro-mechanical garb.
We may never see his like again. Heath Robinson, with semiconductors instead of string, and just as hilarious.

It was a singular joy to be on the staff at the Exploratorium during your first residency in the mid 90’s. Like me you were able to work with Frank’s co-founders before the takeover and be forever altered by the community museum dedicated to human awareness. How lucky were we!
