I'm guessing "yfel" is cognate with "evil", yes?

Did you ever dig into how y and i seem to be used interchangeably in a lot of texts? In everything written by Aelfric for example there seems to be no pattern at all which has led me to believe that y actually merged with i in West Saxon very very early. I wonder if you have an assessment for other dialects / time frames.
