Babies naturally begin using gestures to communicate around 9 to 12 months old, displaying an innate ability for nonverbal expression. Research suggests a preference for certain gestures, such as pointing with the index finger, indicating an early inclination toward specific communication behaviors. Gesturing fosters joint attention between babies and caregivers, forming the basis for shared communication experiences. Reaching gestures prevail in infancy, peaking during the first year, while pointing gestures become more common in the second year, especially between 16 and 20 months, as seen across diverse societies.
